<< The 5 disk set is the exact same thing as the 4 disk, but with a National Geographic special about the movie and Tolkien on the 5th disc. It will also have different packaging and some bookends, I guess for the whole set once all the movies are out. >>

where did u hear this?

Go to www.dvdtalk.com or or www.dvdfile.com or www.thedigitalbits.com , they all have stories about it.

<< i dont have a rip of the oscar dvd.. i have a copy of it!!! gotta love my DVR-AO4

im still going to buy it in august AND in november.
>>

goes to show that "that sort of activity" doesn't really cause the movie industry or music industry to lose money...
as long as the product is QUALITY, people will pay for the real thing...

Who gives a rats a@@ about the movie industry? I already paid twice to see the movie in the theater. It's not like Peter Jackson and the actors didn't get paid for making the film. I'll be damned if I'm gonna shell out $30 to put a movie exec's son through college. I really could care less. I just want the money to go to the people making the film, not the people selling it like crack.

$15 - $29 for a DVD movie is cheap. I don't mind paying that. What gets me is the music industry trying to juice us for $17-$19 for a music CD.

Compare them:

Average 1.5 - 2 hour movie = great video and excellent sounds
Average 30-40 minutes = one or two songs you wanted in the whole CD

Aren't DVD's more costly to stamp? And film? The music industry pays artists anywhere from pennies to about a dollar per CD sold (if you're popular). If you sell 100,000 copies at a buck (and how many do that?), that's only $100,000 you make. That doesn't even take into the account of studio fees and advertisement fees that the artist must pay. How do they go about charging that much for CD's?

This goes back to the argument: If they sold music cd's cheaper, more people would buy them, and they'd sell more, making more profit...

The fun factor is definately for the DVD.

<< The four disk set will be 30 minutes longer - but, remember, you will *not* get a copy of the movie as it was shown in the theater. If you want to get the theatrical version, you will have to get the August release.

Also, there's a five-disk release coming around Christmas...but no one's quite sure exactly what is in it. Speculation is that it will have the 'extended cut' and theatrical version and all the extras..

Its such a marketing scam. There is 30 minutes of additional footage. You can easily program the dvd to play only the original footage or the original + added. You don't need two dvds. You just have to make two lists of chapters to play. 90% of the info is the same. Of course you make double the money selling two dvds, probably even more because the second is pratically done when you make the first one.

Yea, that 4 CD SVHS is great, except for the piracy notice. I was thinking of taking the 2 CD DivX version and put it to DVD-R, but unfortunately I couldn't get it to fit so might as well just use the 4 CDs instead of 2 DVD-Rs, far cheaper and about the same quality.

Thanks for the post JS. I'm only interested in the movie the way it was in the theater. This release is fine.

I too am tired of the "Lucas Syndrom" of releasing 10,000 versions of a movie to entice people to more purchases. Bag it. I'm buying the August release and no more. That'll show em!

Before you plunk down your hard-earned cash, you guys might want to wait for the special 7 disc DVD set that is coming out April 1 2003. It has the standard release, R rated version with extra 30 minutes, widescreen version, DTS version, full screen version, HDTV version, behind the scenes footage, National Geographic special, History Channel: Behind the Ring, The Making Of The Lord of The Rings, the Lord of the Rings storyboard, and interviews with Tolkien's 8 whiny grandchildren who all argue about the movie. Plus clips from the special X rated version to be released in 2004. Oh by the way this is all for the FIRST movie only. Wait until the box sets start coming out for the trilogy.

Sorry but I couldn't resist.. I laughed out loud.. They are honestly released 4 DVDS WORTH OF MATERIAL on one movie? I loved it but damn
