It seems these fires happen every single year, I'm surprised there is even still anything left to burn lol.

wettest year in a decade followed by super hot dry summer = lots of dry brush to burn.

as I was crossing the 5/14 interchange today, the aqueduct was off. I wonder if the pumps further upstream lost electricity?

Wouldn't surprise me if a certain number of wildfires are straight terrorism.

Lol there was a conspiracy that ISIS started the Fort McMurray forest fires years ago. I thought that was kind of amusing, but I guess it's plausible that they would do something like that. Pretty easy to do and get away with.

Get everything nice and denuded for spring mudslides. Oops... Forgot about the drought. I guess everything is just peachy in paradise. Fuckin' shithole. I'd rather be dead than live in CA :^D
How quickly we forget about grasshoppers and flies in December.

Yeah, I'm with you and will bring whiskey.

We are fucked no matter what. If we get a lot of rain, too much stuff grows and we have a bad fire season. If we don't get enough rain, everything is too dry and we have a bad fire season.

While the rest of the country shakes their head and says "no shit. You chose to live there." This is like the north complaining about snow or the south complaining about heat. It happens EVERY SINGLE YEAR in California. I feel bad for the folks who lost everything, but any sense of newsworthyness is gone.

Entire neighborhoods being wiped out is not news worthy? Man I hope they don't ever show a hurricane or tornado on the news. People chose to live there.

Actually, living on the other side of the coast, what are the "causes" and could something have been done?

I really have no idea which is why I'm asking. Years past, it was refusal of burns. Surely that's not a problem anymore. So hot winds/dry air?

The fire conditions are at the highest possible level, this is based on certain things. Humidity in single digits increases the chances, add the wind that pushes flames and you have a recipe for disaster. As for the causes, they say around 95% of the fires are started by people, either on purpose, or accident. People not clearing bushes etc around their homes from fire prone areas is also a concern. I even had an evacuation alert come over my phone from the last round of fires we had not too long ago.

Best of you to you.

Should be some mandatory burns, IMO. in the future.

I thought that they used to do controlled burns to prevent this years ago, but I could be wrong.

Really, really bad land use planning explains a lot of California fire problems. Back in the good old days, some dope would throw a cigette out the window and start a fire. The fire would burn into the wildlands. The fire crews would show up and start digging line. Anchor, flank, pinch, and home for dinner. Okay, not really that simple but the first crews on scene would be fighting a wild fire in the wildlands, working to contain the spread of the fire.

Now add a MFT of people and houses to the mix, right up against forest boundaries, with one way in and one way out on steep, narrow, winding, narrow roads. Now the first crews on the scene are trying to get in to protect the houses, fighting traffic all the way as home owners flee. Instead of anchor, flank, and pinch to contain the fire, the crews are laying hose, setting up sprinklers, and trimming vegetation around the houses. Meanwhile, the fire is getting bigger and bigger, threatening more houses in the next canyon over. Rinse, repeat.

i feel bad for those who are effected by this, but part of me finds it humorous that everyone is like "CA is the best place to live" while im sitting here in an area with a 0% chance of a natural disaster destroying my house

where i live in western NY has virtually no chance of earthquakes, forest fires, landslides, hurricanes, tornadoes and flooding. its close enough it might as well be 0%

and where i am doesn't even get that much snow, and i don't consider a blizzard a natural disaster worth worrying about, because at worse its an annoyance, its is not going to remove my house from the planet.

i also don't count meteor impacts
