You from SD? First good luck. Second, I guess I shouldn't be heading your way next week?
The fire is 35 miles away from San Diego. Just don't go to Lego land and you will be fine.

I hope Jules is OK and that he packed his watches, just in case.

Latest Thomas Fire perimeter in kml:

The Thomas Fire is about a mile from the active condor nest now. The chick is very close to fledging so there is concern that the chick will fly into the path of the fire. If the chick stays in the nest, the firefighters can drop water around the nest cave as the fire approaches but if the chick is on the ground (condors take a while to figure out how to fly) away from the nest there isn't much firefighters can do.

Trivia for the day: the DC-10 is equipped with three retardant tanks built for the Sikorsky Skycranes, using the same controls. The only modifications are the cowlings. By using approved tanks, the company operating the DC-10 avoided having to do a bunch of re-certification. While the interior of the DC-10 is stripped of seats, carpet, and overhead bins, the certificate for commercial passenger flight is intact so, in theory, the operator could stick seats back in and go right back into airline service.

Hey, did Jules ever make it back? Sure hope that all his BMWs, Rolexes and polo ponies made it through the fire OK.

I'm fine. We didn't evacuate even though we received a call on Thursday night saying we should evacuate. The winds had died down and our neighbor was going to stick it out so we decided to as well. He said he was going to be up all night watching the news and that he would let us know if he decided to leave. We said we would do the same. If the winds hadn't died down we would have left.

Fire is 90% contained as of today.

All our shit is fine.

I have taken the 76 to Pechanga, right through the fire area, does this mean I drove right by you?

I'm west of there. We are close to the 76 though, border of Vista/Oceanside. We are in the Vista school district, which is a good thing.

Wow got lucky there, must be nerve wracking being that close. When you're under evac does your work still expect you to be there? That would suck being at work and thinking that you might be losing everything while you're stuck there.

I guess not that you could do much if the fire did come your way. Garden hose won't really cut it.

I called in and told them I wasn't coming in on Friday. I worked from home for a few hours but I was so tired that I took a nap in the afternoon.

We would have left if the winds didn't die down. I had called a couple hotels and we had some friends who offered to let us stay with them. We were packed and ready to go at a moments notice.

I live on a canyon. I remember when our neighbor did a m80 in the backyard and left after it exploded. He did not know that he started a fire on the canyon. The fire was huge in a matter of minutes. Lucky that year we are not having a drought. The firefighter doused it with water. You can hear the crackling of the burning leaves and I lived 2 houses down.

Netflix series Fire Chasers seems amazingly relevant right now.

Los Angeles is not burning. At least not the important part (where I live). Everything is fine although the 405 has been useless north of Rosecrans since the fires started.

I guess the Creek, Rye, and Skirball fires don't count as LA? I mean it's not like the Creek fire is in the Angeles National Forest or anything.
