Ben is still alive. He or someone like him is still trying to control the island.
Keep in mind that the Six also made up completely new and false stories of how they survived and what roles they played while they were "stranded." They are protecting identities and keeping secrets, but are having regrets about how and why. When Jack visited Hurley in the mental hospital, Hurley said: "I don't think we did the right thing, Jack."
The six didn't make it up. It coincides with the official story. They might have made up the details, but overall, it sounds like they made a deal ala Michael (as another poster pointed out).
This would further the "I don't think we did the right thing" idea
Huh? They (jack/kate) said only 8 survived the crash, and 2 died (a lie). Jack never talked to the Marshall (a lie). Jin died day of crash (a lie), Huryley never met Anna Lucia (a lie), etc etc. How is that not making up a new story?
The details are a lie, yes, but it coincides with the "official" story. Look at the last EP, the helicopter pilot says something to the effect of "what if we found the plane? what if we found the other
8 survivors"
I infer that as jack/kate/etc as somehow collaborating with whitmore (assuming he was the one that put the plane there).
I assume you are talking about the part where Frank (The pilot) talks to "Kevin" about 815? He didn't say anything at all about 8 survivors. I'm 99% sure no one other than the 6 have said anything about 8
Frank: "So what's your story Kevin?"
Kevin: "Sorry?"
Frank: "How'd you end up on this tub?"
Kevin: "Looking for a little adventure"
Frank: "Ah Adventure. Well, how do you like this for adventure? You ever hear about Oceanic 815?"
Kevin: "Yeah"
Frank: "What would you say if I told you that the plane they found in that trench wasn't Oceanic 815?"
Kevin: "What is it?"
Frank: "You know those nuts that think the moon landing was faked? Well this is like that, only real. That's why I signed up for this trip, because the owner of this boat belives me. Charles Widmore. He believes 815 is still out there somewhere. I mean, can you imagine what would happen if we found some of those people alive?"
