After the season is over, I think they can get some mileage out of the show by rerunning it but only showing one character at a time and stay on the timeline. First they could show all the flashback scenes then them on the island, then off the island or back in time, then the end. You would have to remember the context of what was happening but I think it would be kind of neat.

My prediction for the big twist in the ending will be that Vincent died in the plane crash and every time we saw him, it was actually MiB.

Vincent will jump into the Glory Hole tunnel and become a doggy smoke monster... it's going to be a "television event" for the ages

Alright, well on day 1, everyone was on the beach the first time we heard the monster. Vincent was there barking up a storm.

No, sir. The first time the survivors hear the monster, Walt specifically says, "Is that Vincent?", who is nowhere to be found. Trust me, my theory is bullet-proof.

Edit: But thanks for making me rewatch ep 1. Kate is seriously adorable.

I forgot to mention that I think young Esau was a total badass.

Surprised he waited that long to kill his fake mother.

I would have been like, "crazy biatch, you killed my mother. Prepare to die!", and would have lopped off her head.

Well... maybe not. Still, I almost expected that from young Esau.
I think they got good actors for both young Jacob and Esau. Too bad they have such a limited role in the series with it's end so close.

Honestly, I thought the only good performances came from MiB, both young and old. Titus Welliver especially brought a lot to the role, even with all the insanity in this episode. It felt like Allison Janney was kind of wasted in this, maybe just because her character was so frustrating.

Definitely agree with this, she was kind of annoying. I thought Jacob did a great job of showing a different side to his character; so used to him being the confident, self-assured one and he showed a lot vulnerability here.

Young MIB - he didn't want anything to do with "mother" at that point [plus he was just a kid at the time] - he found out who she was and gave him more reason not to be with her anymore. I'm surprised he was so willing to want Jacob to go with him after Jacob literally beat the crap out of his face.

Preview from next week we get to see more of young Jacob not acting like how we saw him in this episode - he's more demanding and a bit of an ass.

Eh..1 more regular, then 2.5 hour finale [which will be about 1.5 hours of actual show and 1 hour of @%@$@$# commercials] - and supposedly followed by Jimmy Kimmel hosting a casting party/interview afterwards.. No sleep the night of the 23rd I think..

BTW - regarding MIB & Smokey - if they are one in the same, then Ben must've had access to a control that could manifest smokey whenever he wanted - as smokey appeared shortly after Ben's "daughter" [alex] was killed by the mercenaries... [more answers will just lead to more @#%@%$@# questions...!]

Ah yeah it must have been later during the season.

Anyway let's forget that for a moment. With your theory you are telling me that the Smoke Monster, in the form of Vincent went back in time to the 1970s and lived with Rose and Bernard, for three years?

Even if that were the case, we do not even know if Rose/Bernard/Vincent went back to the present after Juliet hit the bomb. But for the sake of conversation, let's say they did. The problem with that is that they did not return to the present until after we already saw the MiB as Locke. Since we saw that last season, after the Aijari flight crashed. How could the MiB be in the form of Locke when he was still stuck in 1977 as vincent?

I just saw the episode tonight so I'm still catching up on this thread, but anyway.

I think she was smokey also. She seemed to be "black" like the MiB. Jacob said she loved him more than Jacob and I think that's because she saw herself in him and that's why he was special. She also knew when people were on the island and seemed to sneak up their real mom. You're also right in that it seems like she really knew what she was talking about with the going down the hole part. I think she killed everyone in the village, finished the wheel for whatever reason, and then buried it.

I also will point out that the MiB stabbed her before she could say anything to him.

so the fact that she raised him from birth means nothing?

Uhh...I was connecting this occurrence to the twice mentioned, "stab him in the heart before he can say a word or else it's too late." I'm not sure what you are talking about...

is it just me, or did anyone else feel like they made jacob kinda, err...slow (like mentally)? it was weird to see how sharp his brother was vs him, and also unusual for me to see jacob beating his brothers ass a couple times (in the exact same way, oddly enough) when we are so used to his brother being the physical one. imo, i felt like his brother was the good one (not evil). i sympathized with him more.

also, everyone in here take a deep breath.

I keep seeing Walt brought up as an issue that people, seemingly above everything else, demand to see explained.

The problem, something the writers already noted, is that at one point they were considering just how they might incorporate Walt back into the story, considering the actor has aged significantly.
That's the problem with child actors for a TV series that spans 6 years of real time but on the show is less than a year.

They could have another character try and explain him, but it would be a little awkward having his character explained as if important, and his character is nowhere to be found.
To incorporate him with the same actor, they'd have to pull some major plot trickery and that in of itself would likely alienate viewers all the same.

They kind of wrote themselves into a corner with that one.
But not every special character is going to get explanations

Think it's likely we will ever find out why Miles has the "power" he has? I doubt it. We might get an explanation for Hurley considering the dead people thing seems almost the same as the MiB situation.

Some mysteries are better served to just be the way it is. Others deserve attention. Especially if that specialness is actively engaged for the forward progression of critical scenarios. Say, take Desmond for example. If they don't explain Desmond, you'll see me get upset. Considering his specialness, what it is, is seemingly going to be critical for the success of someone... that's kind of important. Walt... well.. while Walt kind of act as a plot device for awhile, he isn't there anymore, and doesn't appear to be necessary for the Losties.

Hell, they could have done something to incorporate Walt as a package abducted by Widmore and quickly dispersed any issues with using the same actor.

I don't know..use a different actor.

If the original Walt's actor's age is an excuse in your eyes...I don't even know waht to say. That is almost embarrassing. Seriously...wtf...Wow...I don't even know where to start on the fact that characters on untold series have had their actors replaced multiple-fold. REALLY!?

Given the fact that Walt, early on in the series, was given EXTRAORDINARY SPECIAL ATTENTION. You know, like the premise of his father getting offed...and.

Shit, I don't even wan't to go on. This is just terrible. Terrible.

Vincent has never been pictured at the same time as the smoke monster as far as I know, and certainly not in season 1.

And it's time travel, dude. Vincent could have flashed forward before the others did for all we know, or hell, he could have just lived on the island in normal time for the next 30 years since he is the smoke monster and is immortal. That would even allow an overlapping period where there were two smoke monsters on the island, which would explain how MiB could be both Christian and Vincent in 2004. Thanks for pointing this out!

Would you quit calling him Esau? Yeah, we all get the connection, but you're the only one on the internet who thinks he's being bad-ass by using the name Esau instead of MIB. He currently has no name, so quit giving him one.

Following your example, I'm going to make my own name for him. From now forth, he will be called Jamal.

To be fair, Hulu and ABC both showed "Jacob and Esau discover their destiny" as the summary for this episode, although they later changed it to "Jacob and his brother..." So it's not like Crono is using it simply because of the Biblical connection.

However, it's never been said on the show or by the writers; in fact, I think they said that he will never receive a name. So I agree that MiB seems to be the most consistently used moniker.
