Lost in X800 alphabet soup

Ok,

I'm totally lost in the x800 alphabet soup. I'm trying to find a replacement for my 9800. I don't want to go PCI-e yet, so I want a good AGP card that will last me for a while.

I think some sort of x800 is probably my best bet, but I'm totally lost in all the different flavors and what the distinction is. If someone could please point me to a place where all the different ones are benchmarked against each other, that would be great. Talking about RAM speed and pixel pipelines doesn't mean much to me, but hard numbers are nice.

Just remember, it has to be AGP.

if you can find any of them below $250 price then buy it ohh and don't go for an 6800gs agp since the Speed was reduced.

Find an X850XT mate, that's the fastest ATI agp out right now. I think the nice $200 deal is gone now though, so this card is likely way too expensive (ie over $300).

Nvidia has the 7800gs, but early signs are it doesn't outperform the x850xt.

Cheapest I can find the X800XT agp for is $280. Not too bad.

I don't necessarily want the fastest, more like best bang for buck sweet-spot. Ideally, I'll be buying something off of FS/FT forum. I just want to get an idea of which cards to go for and which to avoid. The best analogy I can give is Gefore4 TiXXXX vs Geforce4 MX. Slightly different name, vastly different performance. That should also give an idea of how long I've been out of the whole video card game

AGP has down turn in best bang for buck but then a 6800gs AGP will do :! below $200

The 6800GS is by all accounts a decent card. Now that the $200 X850XT deal is gone it's the best value in that price range.

For AGP, in general order of performance fastest first:

X850XT
7800GS (possibly equal)
X800XT
6800GT |
X800XL | These 3 very close.
6800GS |
X800GTO
6800NU
6600GT
9800XT

The last three fluctuate depending on the game in question.

i went from my 9800xt to a [$200 after MIR] x850xt . . . over double the performance and best bang for buck - last month.

That deal is now dead BUT you should be able to find one in FS/T.

that's about 'it' from the ati side

if you'd consider nVidia, look for:

6800GS
6800GT
7800GS

Can't you snag one of those sapphire x800gto2s and get x850xt-x850xtpe performance out of it. Yes...you have to do some overclocking of course.

The GTO2 is pci-e only, he needs agp.

I'd have to say 6800gs AGP. Unlock the pipes (hopefully without artifacts), and you'll pretty much have a GT for ~$200.

Now, if the 7800gs could unlock to 20 pipes... (Don't recall it being able to, though. )
