lost signal to monitor at 2000 splash screen?

been having power supply problems. Bought a whole new case/ps yesterday. Then all of a sudden this week, on start up, when it gets to the splash screen the monitor kicks off, and it sounds like the system is restarting. Also, if I hit the reset before this happens, the monitor shuts down and doesn't come back up.

I've tried new video car, a different motherboard, different monitor with nothing else plugged in, etc... Tried safe mode.

Any ideas? thanks

Sounds like a bad or overloaded power supply.
What psu (make/model/rating) do you have and with what rig?

It was a Sparkle 300 watt that came in my old full tower. A few weeks ago some of it's outputs died. Now it's a no name 350 watt that came in a no name mid tower from CompUSA. I bought the display model with no box.

same thing from what I remember, I'll try that again tonight, but I am pretty sure the same thing happened. I tried so many things. It's driving me nuts!

Well, try unplugging the extra case fans, the cdrom, and anything else that might use power that you can boot without. If it still won't boot after doing that, it probably isn't the power supply (most any 250W and above PS will power a machine with just the essentials running).

Actually, if it's a CompUSA power supply, I'd bet that is the problem. Try another if you can to diagnose the problem.

hmmm, yeah, I'll have to find another power supply. I'm gonna be pretty pissed if the new ps I bought 2 days ago to fix a dying ps isn't in any better shape than what I had.

does the monitor actually turn off, or go into the power save mode (where the screen is off but the light blinks or is another color)

if i overclock my system just a little bit too far, my monitor goes into power save mode at the windows 2000 splash screen. that is another thought for you.

Try starting in VGA mode too. If that succeeds, go through the motions of setting the refresh rate to 60Hz, then reboot.

I suggest insisting on a known name-brand power supply such as Enermax, Antec, Sparkle Power, or Enlight (not intended to be an all-inclusive list, but CompUSA is definitely not my idea of good-quality PSU's).

Yeah, I rarely buy commputer parts in town anyway.

update:

I finally got it to load into safe mode, then I rebooted into regular mode and it actually came up. A burned a few things to CD just in case, then rebooted and the same problem came back. I ended up buying an Antec 330 watt power supply.

Now it has new power supply, video card (going back to the store), I took out all other cars, unplugged DVD player and my burner, no change. Last Friday I brought it into work to try a different monitor and same thing happened. I tried a stick of ram that was still in it's package. I tried an old BX6 board with Celeron 300a. No change.

THe only thing left is a brand new board/cpu/ram, which I would like anyway, but I hate to just keep spending money with no results.

Are you oc'ing? your cpu could be crapping out like edipis mentioned.
Either way I would look towards the motherboard for a power problem.
Try using a PCI video card if you can find one to eliminate an AGP problem.
Honestly if I were you and I could afford it, I'd say screw and buy new stuff.

hehe, I probably will order a new board/cpu/ram combo today. Need to figure out what to get though. ANy thoughts?

The new video card I put in it is a PCI card. Staples was the closest store that night and about to close. PCI is all they had for some reason.

Anyway, this has been extremely frustrating!!!!!

That sucks you weren't able to resolve the problem with a new psu, but at least no you have a good quality power supply- this will help avoid future problems for sure

Yeah, it does suck. Good time to do some upgrades anyway, but I would still like to know exactly what was wrong. I'll probably buy a "cheap" P3 board and try out my two 700's. Might use one for a server and geive the other to my in-laws or something.

I ended up going with:

Albatron PX845PEV pro
P4 2.4b
512 crucial (for now, probably will get another stick or 2 sticks of another brand)
80 gig seagate
120 gig seagate
Antec Trupower PS
Case
LiteOn burner

It's running smooth. Only problem I have right now is some how one of my MS Office disks got damaged, so I haven't been able to load word, outlook, etc...
