Ha....the IRS requires you to keep receipts for 7 years....better pray you don't get audited!

Best Buy/CUSA/CC ads all show the free movie pass, and the rebate for previous owners of LOTR is inside the case. Funny thing, I called Best Buy's customer service Friday asking specifically about the movie pass bit, and they had no idea what I was talking about.

Best Buy has the best deal so far, $24.90. Bet if you wait 'til Friday to pick up SW:E2 you might find it for around $10 (save yourself a trip)....they had the second-best price on Spiderman.

I'm impressed by the size of your bladder. LOTR extended version without leaving your couch? I'll need Depends myself.

THAT'S CRAP. They should have been able to fit it on one disc somehow. If I remember correctly, 4 hours can be fit on one disc, but I guess with the inclusion of DTS and DD, it created more than was allowable on one disc. If that's the case, they should have done a DTS version and a DD version to keep it on one disc only. This kinda spoils it for me (not that I won't get it anyway ). I hate just the little pause that occurs on most DVD's now anyway to allow for the extra space on one side of a DVD, but to have that AND change discs also. All I can say is I'm glad I have a 2 disc changer. At least I won't have to set my popcorn and milkduds down when it switches.

I must say here that Amazon has really pissed me off with this. Yes, most stores are shipping early so that you receive it BY OR BEFORE the release date. But Amazon, the day before it is released, still says "shipping soon--estimated delivery by November 23"
I ordered it on SEPTEMBER 10 so they had plenty of time. Usually I could care less about next day shipping, having something the first day its out, etc. but this movie is almost a year old and I will barely receive it before the sequel is released in the theatres. It especially irks me that other stores customers like deepdiscountdvd and buy.com have already GOTTEN THE DVD! Now I did order a book with the DVD, and they shipped me the book for free back in September, but that still doesn't make up for this week and a half I'll have to wait again!! While everyone else has it ! Oh well.. just when I was getting to finally like Amazon too. I emailed them with the "where's my stuff?" subject.. we'll see what they say.

But yes. this is totally going to kick ass!! Too bad there was no R version though.

I believe they can fit 4 hours on one disc but you have to flip the disc (I think its DVD-18?). Which is basically the same as 2 discs, since you need to get up off your coushy couch and manually flip/change the disc. If you that worried about it, just get a 5 disc changer and then you can watch 5 movies all at once!

EDIT: More info re: DVD-18 shamlessly ripped from DVDtalk

DVD-5 Single Sided, Side Layer
DVD-9 Single Sided, Dual Layer
DVD-10 Double Sided, Single Layer both sides
DVD-14 Double Sided, Single Layer one side, Dual Layer the other
DVD-18 Double Sided, Dual Layer both sides

Well, technically, the DVD-18 technology is called "glue". And it doesn't work very well. We may have seen our last DVD-18's already. They're notoriously suseptable to errors in reproduction and can only be made at a few facilities. It's much easier and cheaper to manufacture 2 DVD-9's instead and you end up with a 2-disc set that sounds much more attractive to the consumer, anyways. Except for Warner, which has stubborly clung to the snapper, there is no reason a studio would want to release a movie on a single disc rather than a 2-disc set (and even Warner has gotten a clue with multi-disc sets of Citizen Kane, Dr Zavagho and the 5 upcoming sets in the wings).

peter jackson said that the cut released to theatres was his cut, and he is the director, so the one in theatres was the director's cut.

remember, at amazon.com, you can send the love, and give your friends 10% off on dvds and cds that you purchase. plus, for every friend that purchases, you get a gift rebate for the same amount that they saved (in other words, you get 10% * price of item).

Crap? Yes, the movie would LOOK like crap if they crammed a 3.5 hour movie with SEVEN audio tracks onto a single 9GB DVD
They were already stretching it for the theatrical release. If you wanted 4 hours on the disc, you'd get 2 audio tracks at the most, and mediocre looking video.

3.5 hours of video:

DTS 6.1 track - 1.2GB
Dolby Digital 5.1 - 705MB
Dolby Surround/Spanish/French track - 302MB
Commentary 1 - 302MB
Commentary 2 - 302MB
Commentary 3 - 302MB
Commentary 4 - 302MB

Total audio: 3.4GB

That would leave approximately 5 - 5.5GB of space for 210 minutes of MPEG-2 video (after taking the menus and other stuff into account). There would be compression artifacts if they tried to do that. Throw in a second disc, and they can give it a much nicer video track. Besides, it's a 3.5 hour movie.....get up and stretch and change the disc!

By the way, there is some more action in this version, but most of it is character development. Plus the two discs of supplements of course.

I have the new single disc edition of Lawrence of Arabia it's 227 mins on a 1 sided disc (DVD-9).

When did you order? I ordered 4 of them on the day the set came out and all four of mine had the movie ticket voucher enclosed. I think it was a limited time type of thing so if you ordered recently, that may be the reason...
