I was eagerly awaiting the release of the extended version "director's cut" of LOTR, but then I found out the movie had to be split onto 2 discs. now I have to at least get the regular widescreen edition so I can watch the movie without an intermission for disc change. bummer. hope they come up with a special extended widescreen movie-only 5.1/6.1 single-disc dvd in the future...

yeah,

I would say this is not a hot deal since you have to buy 2 copies of the movie

maybe lukewarm

$26 for directors cut
$18 for regular LBX
-$5 MIR
(-$8 movie ticket)
+tax (if applicable)
+$0 shipping (Free for orders >$25)

---
= $31

--OR--

$60 for boxset
$18 for regular LBX
-$10 MIR
(-$8 movie ticket)
+tax (if applicable)
+$0 shipping (Free for orders >$25)

---
= $60

Or just do...

$26 for directors cut
-$8 movie ticket (although this can be worth up to $10.50 for those of you who get raped by movie theaters in your city)
+tax (if applicable)
+$0 shipping (Free for orders >$25)

$18 if you don't get raped, $15.50 if you do.

Not bad if you ask me.

does this rebate only apply to purchases from amazon.com? If not then you can avoid paying tax by buying it from deepdiscountdvd.com

The rebate applies to where ever you bought the movie from. Like i bought the original version from costco like in August and i saw this rebate inside of it but i think i threw away my f'n reciept DOH!

oh and this is a repost because i posted all this up like a week or so ago.

Look carefully at that rebate. New Line is handling the rebate, so its available regardless of where you buy the discs.

The bigger point is that the rebate is only for people who bought both the current standard edition and one of the two extended edition sets. You get $5 back if you get the cheaper 4 disc extended set and $10 back if you get the 5 disc extended set with the bookends (the 5th disc is available seperately for about exactly the difference in price after rebate, but you don't get the bookends that way). The rebate coupon for this came with the current theatrical release version discs. You also need your receipt for both purchases.

I don't know if the movie ticket coupon is an Amazon thing or another standard item in the package.

thanks, i was about to clarify this myself; one thing that hasn't been pointed out yet is that this is not 'the director's cut'. this is merely a special extended edition of the original, with some extra material (making of, cast commentary, etc). For the record,

A director's cut is..."Not the original or theatrically released version, the director's cut of a film has different, director-approved editing choices. It usually involves restoring previously unused scenes or making alterations to the sound design."

Peter Jackson, Director of FOTR has already spoken out on this matter:

"I don't really want to call it the director's cut", Jackson said. Also, he shot down the fanboy fantasies that have the DVD containing an R-Rated gory cut of the film:

"It's all drama. There is this thing on the Net about all this gory stuff I was supposed to have shot, but I didn't. We were going for a (censor's rating) of PG13 and you can't waste time shooting stuff that you know is going to get cut," he said. "It will tee everybody up before the release of The Two Towers (in December)."
---

but i have heard and read reviews that it's gonna be one mother of a dvd set.

Hey, 2 versions is confusing enough. I guess this longer "extended" version is for home replay only and won't be showing at the theaters (or will it?). Wonder how different it is, or where the extra 30 minutes of scenes occur?

Really there's only two.

There's the theatrical release.

Then there's the 30-minute longer release - but it's being sold as 2 sets. One four-disk set. And one 5-disk set with bookends. The extra disk is a National Geographic documentary, I think.

apparently you are wrong, from the link provided by amdi8

"The Extended Edition of The Fellowship of the Ring is, essentially, the ?director?s cut,? with thirty minutes of additional footage incorporated into the film."

re. the rebate: For those who bought the first version from Best Buy.com back when it first came out (like a number here on Anandtech did), you can go to their web site, pull up the order, and print out a receipt to use for the rebate. Handy if you don't keep copies of receipts on everything (like I don't).

Would anyone be willing to make a scan of their receipt for the Special Edition release? That way those of us who don't have a copy of our receipt could get in on this rebate. Its really stupid that they expect you to keep and submit your receipt.

So the free movie ticket is in the DVD? If that's the case, I think I will just pick it up at Walmart. Last time I order from Amazon, the DVD was damaged. Idiot that packed my DVD just placed the packing material on top of disc, not around, and with help from UPS the dics cover on my "Beauty and the Beast" was shreded.

Buy.com usually has cheaper prices than Amazon and free shipping. The last DVD I got from them was packed in a nice small form fitting cardboard box. The one I got from Amazon was floating around in a box that could have held 20 DVDs!

Wouldn't you know, I just checked Buy.com and a couple of the new LOTRs don't have the free shipping.

Buy.com (and probably most everybody else for that matter) is shipping early. It was not supposed to come out until the 12th. I just got mine in the mail today. I splurged and got the one with the statues. They packed that thing in like a baby. Those extra and extended scenes are like rich ice cream filling in the cracks after a really good meal.
