Yeah - though its worth mentioning there are actaully 2 platinum editions. The other (more expensive) one includes pillars of argonath (sp?) bookends and some other stuff in addition to the 4 dvd set.

supposedly...the std edition and the extended edition do not have the same extras. thus, if you're a fan, you'll want both editions. and yes, you do have to purchase both the std and extended to qualify for the $5.

I ordered the extended with my $40 GC for the Kingston Ram goof. Sweet deal for me...plus $5 back.

Talk about milking a movie for all it's worth. What's next a super duper, mega, 6-DVD diamond edition?

The rebate is strictly for those who bought the 2-disc version not knowing that a 4 and 5 disc version were in the works (of maybe they did know and didn't care). The bottom line is that you have to have bought the 2 disc set as well to get the rebate.

Sorry to rant but I'm satisfied with one release.

I believe they did announce the extended version at the same time as the standard so at least most people had an idea that something more "complete" was about to come out. What I can't stand is when a barebones edition is followed months later by a Special/Collector's/Whatever edition without any warning (besides a gut premonition) of its release.

How would you not know when you just said they annouced an extended version at the same time. I believe many people knew about this extended version, and waited, like me, or some people don't care and just got the regular one, then there are those who want both. But don't just on them saying that they didn't say anything about a special edition, because they did.

Read his post again, I believe you two are on the same side.

manicm doesn't like unannounced deluxe editions, but thinks that the FOTR was announced (which it was).

Daddy-o has it right. I knew and waited. The second part of my post was just in general, not related to the LOTR case. Sorry if I was confusing.

I don't think that the extra 30 minutes will significantly change the storyline. As other movies have done, they cut down on some scenes to make the theatrical movie a bit shorter running time. I too want to see the extra 30 minutes they cut out, but my point is, why do they want us to buy the theatrical version AND the extended version (which should be identical to the theatrical version MINUS the 30 mins) in order to have the $5 rebate.

I too have waited for the extended edition since they pre-anounced it, but will be willing to forgo the $5 rebate, since buying the theatrical version will put me at a loss of $12.97 (Theatrical version $17.97 - $5 rebate)

cheers

Since the rebates require the UPC, doesn't that mean we'll have to cut our DVD covers?

its not UPC, its "proof of purchase", its a tab in between the cover. Usually, its a dotted-ready to rip out in the inside midportion of the DVD case.

I knew about the extended edtion when I bought the original.
I also knew there was going to be a $5 rebate if you bought both.
I didn't know you needed the original sales reciept from the first regular edition.

I have also read there is a super edition coming out sometime next year that will have another
30 minutes extra for a total of one hour over the original.

Well I am just gonna eat the $5. First off, I don't have any idea what I did with the receipt for the standard LOTR, and second, it requires the UPC from the case. I don't want to cut up my DVD cases or labels. Most of my friends think I am dumb, but I am the kind of person that will buy a Previously Viewed DVD and use Goo Gone to remove the sticker and I keep all my DVD cases (and DVD's) in perfect condition, and a LOTR DVD with the UPC cut off would drive me crazy.

I think all DVDs have a UPC inside the case that can be taken out relativly easily as to not wreck the outside of the case

ive read the book, i bet youve read the book, ive seen the teaser for the extended version included on the currently released dvd. i know what to expect in the extra 30 minutes. its not a matter of significantly changing the storyline, i didnt say that. it will add to the storyline, and for fans of the book, make the movie that much closer to the book we love, let us see more scenes from that world and more characterization

why a rebate only for those who bought both? duh. many reasons: why should you get a rebate for buying one thing? if you buy the same thing twice, it makes sense that they should pay you back some money. its incentive for people to do so. its incentive for those who bought the first DVD because they didnt want to wait for extended (like me), to buy new one
