I bet 'the Hobbit' gets made eventually to go head to head with the Potter series.

Ill say YAY only if PJ gets it. I think The Hobbit would lend itself far easier to movies than the Lord Of The Rings. Theres so many subplots and little things CRUCIAL to the main plot in LOTR. What is needed for the hobbit? The unexpected party, the trolls in the woods, the goblin caves (where we first meet gollum), the spiders in Mirkwood, the Elves in Mirkwood, getting up to the lonely mountain, and the final battle with Smaug at Dale. We can leave out Beorn for the same reason Tom Bombadil was left out, and while I would LOVE to see the final battle at the Lonely Mountain, It isnt integral to the plot of the story. For LOTR, take that and multiply it tenfold.

I doubt the Hobbit will get made though. Its basicly (and this is coming from an almost lifelong Tolkien fan) just LOTR-Lite, and would probably taken as such by John Q. Public. Unless New Line just really really really wants to do it, and they can convince Peter Jackson to do it.

But they would have to do it soon, before Ian MacKellan goes to his OWN grey havens.

Don 't forget the BADEST reason: SMAUG!

PJ already said that he won't do The Hobbit. The quote was something along the lines of "I'll let some other brave director try it and then I'll go watch it."

i was enjoying the movie.... UNTIL...
this highschool kid started to cry when Gandalf came back and revealed himself...
it was not just a simple tears... he was shaking and huffing and all that stuff... and that's not all... he cried several times again...

i know i might be wrong(am i?) but i couldnt help but laugh.. ... damn i still get the giggles...

did any of you "lord heads" cry?
i just dont get it...

for me, only time I've shed a tear in a movie theater was for Saving Private Ryan, the part when mother falls to the ground when she receives the message of her son's death.

all in all i give LOTR:TT 3.5 stars out of 5
wait.. that crying guy made it more fun.. i give it 4!!

I can't say I'm mad about Faramit because I think he will be far more developed in the next film to be someone worthy of Osgiliath (or wherever it is Aragorn gives him) and worthy of Eowyn as well.
I was also kinda pissed Haldir died because I liked him. Oh well, can't win them all.

Hayabusarider made a good point to me in a PM...

Maybe people laughed at some of the Gollum stuff because basically ALL previous CG characters have been goofy or funny in some way and they just subconsciously think that this is Gollum's part. Yeah some Gollum scenes were intended to be light-hearted but it starts to drive you nuts when you hear people giggling or teenage girls saying "awwwwwwwwwwwww" every time Gollum makes a freakin facial expression!!!

If you've read the books I don't see how you couldn't see Gollum's performance in the movie as just haunting. It was great.

I'd have to say that I was one of those that laughed at Gollum, but only in those places where it seemed to purposely be humorous (beating the fish). I really liked what they did with his split personality, like at first with different angles, and then at the end all in one shot. Personally, I laughed at Gimli a lot more. One of my favorite more humorous lines:

"I've killed two. "
"I'm on 17."

eh, or something along those lines. All I have to say is that Legolas is one badass mofo imo. Some of the stuff he pulls off in the movie are craaaaazy. I was just kinda disappointed how he didn't kill that suicide bomber orc guy. That has seemingly been his only failure so far.
oh yeah, and ditto on all the faramir changes stuff. Hopefully they'll fix him up in rotk.

my $0.02

I sat down in the theatre to see the movie, but the usher asked me to leave.

My skin cleared up.

I absolutely loved this movie. I can think of very few ways that it could have been more amazing. Not since the Godfather II has a sequel been so freakin' awesome.

I couldn't believe some of the frickin' morons in the theater though. There is a thing as liking something a little too damn much. Someone needs to tell these weirdos that it doesn't freakin' matter that Gandalf's hair is too long or some crap like that. Geez...watch it as a movie.

If you're NOT one of these people, you will not have a better time at the movies.

I got kinda sick of all the midget jokes with Gimli. Seemed like everything he said or did was self-depricating humor.

I really hated it when the Helm's Deep battle is about to begin, and he can't see over the wall. Then Legolas says, "do you want me to get you a box?" Totally killed the tension that was building up to the battle.

I thought TTT was supposed to be more serious and darker than the first one. But this movie had way more humor in it.

Can you imagine it without a shred of humor? Personally I enjoy Gimli as comic relief more than Merry/Pip...but that's just me. The only bit I didn't like was his burp in the Golden Hall. It was too out of place. Enjoyed the rest though.

Also that specific scene you mentioned was good character development between Legolas and Gimli...showed how they were starting to really bond.

Does treebeard really talk to merry/pip for 24 hours straight while he's walking through the forest?

everytime they return back to treebeard, he's always walking and talking

and the sun sets/rises

Of course I'm fine with it having humor. But everything Gimli said or did was him being ridiculous in some way.
- The whole time they're chasing down the Uruk-Hi
- Getting The warg/orc/warg piled on him
- The chain mail
- The horse nonsense while they are going to Helm's deep
- The horse nonsense when they are about to fight the warg riders
- The "i can't see" nonsense before the battle

Maybe if they eliminated some of those parts it wouldn't have gotten so old.

Oh and I don't think I saw this mentioned... but was the "Voice of Saruman" chapter part of TTT? I can't remember. It was probably my favorite chapter in the whole trilogy. I thought it was better than the ending of ROTK.

I am a huge Tolkien fan and I read the trilogy probably five times in my life so:

I really liked Fellowship of the Ring very much and went back to see it twice. But The Two Towers left me dissatisfied and I won't go back a second time to see it. This time around Jackson changed too much of the story for my taste and what he invented was tedious and no where near as good as what he left out. IMHO, there was too much Helm's Deep and not enough Fangorn. This movie was obviously directed at the Game Boy crowd with its over emphasis on battles.
Yes, Faramir was a shock if you had read the books, and I honestly doubt that the Nazgul would have let Frodo get away with the ring after he offered it to him...
The Helm's Deep sequence went on and on and on...yawn. And where did the elves come from? That wasn't in the book I don't think. Where were the trees that Gandalf drove the orcs under???

What I did like:

Gollum! He was wonderful, my precious!
Nazgul
Balrog again!
Treebeard, except during the ent attack on Isenguard. That looked fake. The ents wading through the water really looked like miniatures to me. Jackson should have kept the camera's POV on the ground looking UP at the ents, so that they always seemed huge like trees.

I gave FOTR an A. I give TTT a B-.

Still, I think Jackson has done a far better job than to be expected from Hollywood.

From a LOTR standpoint, all I liked was Gollum. Everything else storywise was raped. Especially Faramir. The elves coming out of nowhere also pissed me off a tad bit, as an LOTR fan.

From a movie standpoint, I liked the whole thing. It was a very fun movie to watch, and I will probably see it another couple times. I cant get past the faramir thing, but it was pretty cool seeing the elves fight.

i totally agree.

I'm just really disappointed that they left Shelob out ... either RotK is going to be butchered to hell or long as hell (and I'd love it to be long as hell ) but I have a feeling that they're going to leave a lot out.

Oh well, *clicks counter and waits for RotK to come out*.

Supposedly RotK is going to be 4 hours with an intermission or something? I recall reading that posted by kami in a thread here.
Or maybe it was someone else.

TTT is now estimated at around $101 million after 5 days. Fellowship of the Ring was only around $75 million at this point!
