Whoa! Hold it!
I've used all platforms and all OSes. If you're talking about workstations, there isn't really anything wrong with macs, sparcs, pc because it is the ITs' responsibility to make sure they are running right. I work in a school where we have a brand new Sun Opteron server and use PC workstations because PC workstations are cheaper than Sparc stations. We do have some Sparc workstations, and their monitors are just plain bad. It is only good for text and nothing else. (Note: These are NOT SGI workstation computers...only Sparc).
As for Macs, the most evil thing that they have done is that you cannot dual boot the Panther OS X and the older Mac OS 9 and below. By dual-boot, I mean using 2 different hard drive or partition and loading one OS on one drive or partition while loading another OS to another drive or partition. Mac basically thumbed their nose at you using their older software. To me, that is a travesty because I have some older Mac software that will not run under classic mode, but I'm stuck having to reboot Mac and then choose OS 9. It's just awful. I would love the ability to tinker whatever I want with the computer, and for Mac to deny me that authority is just wrong.
The first good Sun workstation starts at UltraSPARC Sun Blade 1500 which is priced at $1995. This is a bit steep for a workstation. The performance on the Sparcs is excellent however when using Star Office or using business productivity suites. However, Suns are just as bad as Macs when you want to use older software (correct me if I'm wrong here).
With PCs, you can use anything under the sun (pun unintended ) with the exception of Apple OS, UNIX, and Amiga software.
Speaking of UNIX, I was watching Jurassic Park last night...have you ever seen such a horrible (although cool) GUI in your life?
