As has been said already, nobody hates Sun because Sun hasn't impacted many people in any way. Everybody hates Apple because we were stuck using them in the public education system . I personally always felt better coming home to my 25MHz 486 so I could play Syndicate and Civilization (which, granted, were later ported to Macintosh) on a VGA monitor. Even as a nine year old, I was more comfortable with the command prompt than I was with Apple's fledgling GUI, or worse yet, whatever the hell was on those green-screen computers (bootable disks I believe). Schools were usually far behind, so Apple stuff always seemed crappy and left us with a bad image.

sun has impacted you but you don't even know it since they're usually running in the background away from prying eyes.

Why are we looking for more haterz? Can't we all just get along?

I think the bottom line is Apple is a far more name recognizable brand than is Sun or SGI. Even among many of the users of this board. I know of Sun and SGI. I have seen boxes by both companies. I have no experience using or interacting with either. I've used MACs and PCs. I wager so have a large majority of people on the board. Hence the "hate" for Apple and the lack of hate (or any other opinion) for Sun or SGI.

sun's are great for servers. in fact, apple's are great for servers. but have you seen the low-end workstations they sell? i'd definitely take apple's least expensive mac over sun's least expensive workstation.

Maybe because apple tries to be insanly user friendly, which isn't for everyone lots of people prefer something that isnt dumbed down too much. Apple with their marketing and such is by far the easiest to make fun of though.

i don't see windows xp being any less dumbed down

Paying $3000 for a tower or laptop then having to go aftermarket just to get 2 mouse buttons is lame.
Especially since you have to drag an external mouse everywere you take your slick powerbook.

Why would you need more than 1 button? To right click, I hold down ctrl and click. My fingers are generally on the keyboard anyways.

Having been a PC owner from the very beginning, let me be the first to say that I wish another platform was the one to rise to the top. The whole x86 CPU atchitecture is flawed from the ground up!
Technically speaking, the 68000-series processors used in ALL of the competitors (Amiga, Atari ST, Mac) were vastly superior. Early operating systems vastly superior.... if only they'd MARKETED differently and/or did the "clone" thing - the PC could have died the death it deserved.

But IBM = push. "We're a business, we want to run with a company called 'International Business Machines' ".

But the 8088 was chosen for being cheap and readily available... used in soda machines all over the world.

[sigh] Amiga had amazing graphics and sound while the IBM platform was using EGA and pre-Adlib sound (which was still below Amiga's 4-voice MOD).

Years ago when I could view a web page without some stupid "Sun" Java add-in trying to load, life was definitely better for me.

I don't personally care about the platform being opened/closed/whatever.

I'd buy a Mac tomorrow to at least toy around with if I didn't feel like I was being ripped off. Even their lowest of the low-end is the $800 eMac... 1GHZ CPU, 128 MB RAM, 40GB HD, Radeon 7500, Combo Drive.

A month ago I built my A64 3200+ with AIW 9600 for around $900... money much better spent for the better performance and storage.

Throw in $300 for the OS, a couple hundred for other software...

That price included the OS, and unless you know something I don't about my own system, I don't have hundreds of dollars worth of other programs.

I wonder why everytime I price an opteron it comes out to more than $900 before software... And I just figured you did something with your computer

Since some folks seemed so intrigued, I got the 3200+ for $256 shipped. And the rest of the parts were quality parts as well... Antec Case/PSU, MSI Neo MB, Mushkin 3500 DDR, etc. Granted I was patient and struck when great deals presented themselves to save as much money as possible, but potential Apple buyers don't even have that option.

And if you spend $300 on an OS, I wouldn't want to shop where you do.

Apple used to license their tech to "clones" and it almost destroyed Apple. Apple depends on hardware sales to survive.

Well, speaking for the last 3 companys I worked for, the only Sun boxes we had were in the computer room, cost about $250k-$1m apiece, and ran terrabyte sized Oracle databases. Not much to compare to PC's, not even in the same league.

Keep in mind MACs are more expensive at first but in the long run not as much. They don't go obsolete in 6 months. In fact, I know people who have MACs that are 4-5 yrs old and still able to run the latest OSX pretty well. A PC would probably need major overhauling to run the next edition of Windows bloatware well.

I own both myself. PCs are great for games and porn.

Ok, you want to know why I hate Apple and not sun or SGI? Its because of the vast number of STUPID Apple fan boys and the fraudulent (see first topic) claims they insisit on making. I about gagged when the G5 came out saying "The worlds fastest, most powerful, PC ever" It claimed to have the first 64-bit Processor, But AMD had clearly released the Optron by then, They claimed to be the fastest, But used THERE OWN BENCHMARKING PROGRAMS, clearly giving them the advantage. And then dell sued them, and won, for lieing.

The sooner Apple goes out of buisness the better, no company, nor its fans, get on my nerves more.

Opteron isn't a chip meant for PCs, its a server class chip. Thats why AMD has Athlon64. Since when is SPECint their own benchmarking program? Dell did not sue them, they compained to the BBB. Big difference. You would think a Linux user would be smarter, or least be used to reading more than headlines.

And I'm surprised the price of Macs seems to be the main issue with why most Mac-haters exist. How many people feel ripped off when they buy a BMW or Mercedes? Heck, do you guys hate Public transportation because you can walk for free? Or hate Coke and Pepsi because Shasta or Albertson's brand cola is cheaper? If you hate everything that cost a little bit more then you must have very plain lives.

most hate out of necessity. they are gamers, so mac is out of the question to begin with. they can't afford, they instead have to self build a pc anyways...best to denigrate the other team to make yourself feel better about what you can own

About sums it up. If you want to see Sun haters, go over to slashdot. Why do most people complain about Sun? Cost. These aren't admins or IT managers compaining. They know the value of their investment. A x86 server may be cheaper, but typically a Sun server is bulletproof, and the only way its going down is if you shut it down. Not to mention first class support. For a lot of people that kind of reliability and service matters, especially when their business depends on it. For others cost is more of a concern than piece of mind, so more power to them. But hate? sheesh.

I can see why someone would choose not to go with Sun or Apple, but to hate them and want them to go out of business is ridiculous. If anything, people should hate Dell for using slave labor. I find that kind of thing more offensive than a higher price tag to something that I do NOT have to buy.
