Don't be suckered into using these CONTROLLED, PROPRIETARY FORMATS. By using these formats, you would be giving FULL INFORMATION to Microsoft and Adobe regarding what kinds of books you download and read. Also, you would be strengtening their market position in the newly emerging market of e-books, and thereby supporting the loss of your rights as a reader, as a consumer, and as a citizen.

Instead, use and support FREE, OPEN FORMATS. These formats include standard ASCII text, unencrypted pdf, standard Postscript, among others.

Below is a brief list of websites where you can find ALL of the above books and THOUSANDS MORE in FREE, OPEN FORMATS, UNCONTROLLED BY GREEDY MONEY-GRUBBING CORPORATE INTERESTS.

When you use these FREE, OPEN FORMATS, no one will ever know which books you are downloading, you will not have to "authenticate" your reader software at any point, and you are free to share these e-books with any and everyone you choose.

These FREE, OPEN FORMATS allow you to exercise your fundamental right to lead a private life, your fair use right to share your favorite texts with your friends and family, and to excerpt parts of the text for academic, satirical or critical purposes. The aforementioned are valuable rights protected by the American Constitution.

However, the CONTROLLED, PROPRIETARY FORMATS used by Microsoft and Adobe STEAL THESE VALUABLE RIGHTS FROM YOU. If you use and support these corporate formats, YOU WOULD BE WILLINGLY GIVING UP YOUR RIGHT TO LEAD A PRIVATE LIFE, YOUR RIGHT TO SHARE, AND YOUR RIGHT TO MAKE FAIR USE OF INTELLECTUAL WORKS.

Be smart and don't willingly give up your rights as an e-book reader. Shun CONTROLLED, PROPRIETARY FORMATS. Support FREE, OPEN FORMATS.

Here are a number of e-text libraries that use FREE, OPEN FORMATS:

It has nothing to do with conspiracy... but if you're too slow to see the difference of a future where MS controls ebook format and a free public domain version, then there's no use convincing you. Wagner made some VERY valid points, and with some great links too boot. Too bad for you that you couldn't take the time to look things through.

The University of Virginia's Electronic Text Center has a huge collection of online works in both MS Reader format and in "FREE, OPEN FORMATS, UNCONTROLLED BY GREEDY MONEY-GRUBBING CORPORATE INTERESTS."

http://etext.virginia.edu/ebooks/ebooklist.html

Personally, I like the Microsoft Reader. Reading and browsing text is much easier with the Reader software than it is with a plain text or HTML document. Also, authenticating the software is not necessary to download free books from sites like that of the University of Virginia. AFAIK, the authentication only comes into play when you plan to purchase books from online retailers like B&N.

<edit>
The other books are available in the "collections" section of the University of Virginia site. The address is: http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/.

Encypted e-books are just the beginning. We are witnessing the opening shots in a long, drawn-out battle of hardware and content providers, against consumers and their fair use rights. The plan is to transform the PC from the open machine that it is today, into an encypted beast that prevents you from getting at the data at every step of the way. That means your HD will be encrypted by Maxtor, your monitor cable by ViewSonic, your graphics card memory by NVidia, your main memory by Mushkin, your USB speakers by Creative, and Microsoft, being your OS provider, will have a backup key to each of these encryption schemes. You, as a consumer, will not have any decryption keys. You will only be allowed to view analog output, in accordance with the license terms set by your content provider. Copying and pasting, taking screenshots, grabbing video, and the like, will be a thing of the past. Fair use will be a thing of the past.

This may all sound like paranoid hardcore science fiction to you. But a large consortium of hardware manufacturers and content providers is already establihing standards for the scheme explained above. HDTV, digital flatpanels, the next revision of USB, and other output technologies are expected to be compliant with such encryption.

For an insight into the implications of such technological control, see this interview of esteemed academic David Touretzky:

http://www.salon.com/tech/feature/2000/09/13/touretzky/index.html

Don't let this happen. Put the scum-of-the-earth greedy corps and their controlled, propreitary formats where they belong: Out of business. Do not reward such evil control with your dollars. Do not buy into a pretty interface that forces you into digital slavery. Be smart. Use free, open formats.

calm down, moralpanic...you make it sound like the world's over. I only said that thing about conspiracy just for the heck of it...if you're so personally offended by proprietory ebooks, then don't use it and quit being so anal retentive.

and btw, contrary to what you said, I DID read his posts and went to some of the sites, and frankly, moralpanic, I still prefer the nicer, more professional layout of the proprietory ebook and I don't really care if they do track what I d/l and read..you see, using products such as adobe acrobat reader is inevitable - for example, most electronic user guides for hardwares is in .pdf format so if you bought an OEM drive and want to read the user guide, you'll have to use acrobat reader (http://www.westerndigital.com/products/drives/wd205ba-c.html). so do what you want, and I'll continue to use adobe...and you should really take that plunger out of your ass before you go pyscho on somebody else, you schizophrenic fool.

EmperorNero,

Check above, where I said that unencrypted pdf is a FREE, OPEN FORMAT. All of your product manuals are therefore easily readable by Adobe Acrobat, Aladdin Ghostscript, or a zillion other free alternatives. Unencypted pdf is your friend.

The offending formats are Softlock-protected pdf, readable only on the Glassbook Reader, and Microsoft .lit files, readable only on Microsoft Reader. Most any other text format right now is FREE and OPEN - most likely a testament to the fact that consumers do not like being told what they can or cannot do with their books and ebooks.

Cheers,
- Wagner

I agree with Wagner; some caution as to whom we relinquish our freedom to choose might be prudent. Some books with very poignant opinions as to the dangers of authoritarianism and totalitarianism are:

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley

1984 by George Orwell

By the way, I did a search for both ebooks but nothing turned up.

Hey speaking of ebooks, do you guys know of any free software for palm devices that will allow me to download books to my palm v to read on the road? I also got the email from Barnes and Noble asking me to check out their free ebooks. I would have, if they had a free one in portable format.

By the way: George Orwel's (Orwell's?) 1984 is a great book and is VERY relevant to the modern world.

Regardless of what you believe in, this is a pretty good deal. They offer a lot of free books. I suggest that you download everyone right now while they're free. MS Reader has a nice interface that let you keep track of your library. So if you ever get bored, or stuck waiting for a download, start reading one of those free books.

These books will always be free, and freely available, because the books being made available in these proprietary formats right now, are books whose copyrights have already expired. Just go to any one of the many ebook libraries I have listed above, and you will find these books, and thousands more, for free, now and forever, in free, open formats.

I fail to see why our generation is so ready and willing to become digital slaves over a new, pretty interface. Have we lost our brains, our common sense, or our desire to lead a free, private life? Is a new, pretty interface all that it takes to get you to give over your most essential, fundamental rights? I find this pretty tragic.

hefietz, here you go:

rocketbook for palm

I was surprised at how much ppl bitch and whine...even when they are getting free stuff! sheesh, damn picky, anal bastards.

and wagner, a nice interface and readability is everything: ebooks are usually long, do you want to spend hours reading plain ASCII on the monitor and get eye fatigue? personally, the font MS uses for their reader is nice and is overall better on your eyes. if you're so paranoid about over trivial things, then just DON'T use proprietory stuff.

not to mention most of those books you mentioned are probably copyright protected so you're encouraging piracy. but hey, if you don't have any morals whatsoever, feel free to continue pirating books.

oh really? the "power and corruption of the govt and large companies" really dwindles down to the individual who runs them - what's one of the best words to describe them? would you agree that it's "dishonesty"? now apply that the the invidual consumers - such as people who tend to steal intellectual property and then try to justify it by saying the "corrupt businesses" deserve to lose money. hmm...I guess this corruption thing works both ways huh?

and lastly, MS, adobe, and glassbook make products...if they are good, there will be a lot of demand, and thus, they most likely earn the revenue - and that revenue goes directly to the business, the programmers, the people who package the products, the delivery man, the guy who makes the ad to promote their product, the guy who runs the ad business, and ultimately, the AUTHOR, etc etc. and then there're ppl who just steal and make stupid excuses like "Don't be suckered into using these CONTROLLED, PROPRIETARY FORMATS." now tell me, did they earn it?

I don't think that anyone here has said that these corrupt businesses deserve to lose money. But NO business deserves to make money while compromising the rights of an individual. That was the point that Wagner was making, that is the point I'm making. In your haste to defend yourself and attack others, you've missed the point.
