Lotus Elise *what a sweet car.

For a little over $40k the Lotus Elise looks like a sweet deal. IMO, a couple of the drawbacks that I've found with the car are...

1) Why only a 4 cylinder? Seems kinda puny to me. I'm not a car buff so maybe someone could clarify that for me.

2) Compared to a Nissan Z the Lotus Elise just doesn't look that comfortable.

3) No automatic? Only stick!

The car looks like it's worth more than $40k. I'm suprised more people don't drive these cars.

1. Because the engine bay is tiny, and the car is only 1900 lbs. You need a light, small engine. Yes, the K20A would have been nicer, but they couldn't get Honda to agree.

Its reallly small, more tiny than a miata.

The handling is great, but some may not like the "stiff" ride/suspension; it is not a dailiy driver in other words.

Why would you buy a car like this in auto? Stick only....

The 4cyl is nicely balanced with the weight of the car as well as the handling aspects of it. There is someone who has turbo'd the car, and make it ahve higher G on the skidpad (as if it didn't have enough)

I'd rather have a corvette for the price of the Elise+markup. But in anycase, i'd still love to have the elise...it a great car. Heck, i'd drive it everyday, i don't mind the stiff suspension on it; perhaps i'd change over to some ohlins or moton shocks/coilovers.

It has a 4 cycliner toyota engine with VVTL-i.
This thing is FAST and it handles awesome.

1. 4 cylinders = who cares it weights nothing....it does 0-60 in like ~5 seconds and its made for track driving
2. its not meant to be comfortable its meant to be a fast light weight track car....there are stock options to not have AC / stero etc.
3. um why would you want an auto on a track car?

I...have....driven....THAT....machine. although its a crime to even call it a machine...its so so much more. I am only 21 but I some day plan on owning the elise. I have gone skydiving, base jumping, some serious downhill mountain biking but no adreneline rush compares to the one I had in the elise. Seriously people, if you can afford it, and if you can treat it better than you treat your wife/gf/family/friends...then go buy this car. and the last i heard it was 36k...but i guess the price went up? or was i misinformed?

Priced out (we did this at work one day), it's about $42k or so.. but that's with a bunch of useless options.

IMO, the elise is awesome, but I'm not a huge fan of the styling.

1. you will be lucky to find it for 40k... its MSRP is 43k not to mention you probably want to pay for leather seats, power windows, and carpers (another 2k) + dealer markup
2. don't see how lack of cargo room is not a drawback
3. if you are complaigning about manual, maybe this car isn't for you
4. this would have to be a recreational car. Most people don't have the kind of money to dump on a 40k (close to 50k) car just for recreation. Sport car wise, you get more space from a vette or boxter
