I brought my Maxtor 120 GB 7299 rpm 8mb cache Diamondplus 9 series a while ago - almost 6 months now.
It been very loud from the start - I believe it's the seeking noise. It's like a clicking noise but continous. It only does that when I'm accessing a large file or transferring files. Otherwise, it's whisper quiet. The thing that puzzles me was that I ran diagnostic tests and the HDD was shown to be structurally sound and ok.
I also have a 80 GB Maxtor (same specs 8mb cache 7200 rpm ) and that drive never makes a single peep. Whisper quiet. No clicking or drive seeking noise.
I partition the `120 gb tonight into a 80gb part and a 40gb part and the drive seems quieter!
When I defrag, there's still the clicking noise but it's not quite as loud.
I been also moving files around - def. quieter!
Can someone please explain what is going on? Thanks
