I brought my Maxtor 120 GB 7299 rpm 8mb cache Diamondplus 9 series a while ago - almost 6 months now.

It been very loud from the start - I believe it's the seeking noise. It's like a clicking noise but continous. It only does that when I'm accessing a large file or transferring files. Otherwise, it's whisper quiet. The thing that puzzles me was that I ran diagnostic tests and the HDD was shown to be structurally sound and ok.

I also have a 80 GB Maxtor (same specs 8mb cache 7200 rpm ) and that drive never makes a single peep. Whisper quiet. No clicking or drive seeking noise.

I partition the `120 gb tonight into a 80gb part and a 40gb part and the drive seems quieter!
When I defrag, there's still the clicking noise but it's not quite as loud.

I been also moving files around - def. quieter!

Can someone please explain what is going on? Thanks

Go download the maxtor acoustic management software from Maxtor's site.
After I turned it on, it was silent, the difference was night and day.
Also no discernable performance was lost by turning it on.

Some WD drives have a tendency to develope an extremely high pitch whine on idle, which is far far more irritating than the seek noises on the Maxtor.

You lose performance in random access times, typically going from 13-14ms to 19-20ms.

Same issue with my DM+9 - compared to my Barracuda 4, its silent on idle but noisy when seeking.

However, i've got used to the seek noise, and find it to be a useful indiciator when my system's working away.

Yeah, I've just replaced a Maxtor HD for a WD 400BB... I can barely hear it. The Maxtor was so loud and so anoying... I won't buy anything from Maxtor ever again.

Glad to find that others have the same problem

At first I was like "geez, it's going to fail on me even tho I just popped it in" but I ran tests regularly and everything came up fine.

The funny thing is that my friend also have the same 120gb and his is silent. My 80GB maxtor is also silent. I guess that's the luck of the draw.:disgust:

But after it is paritioned, it's quieter!

I got a 250gb maxtor two weeks ago. Yup it made tons of clicking noises....

Then I noticed that it was giving me I/O errors....I think I got a dud so I'm RMA'ing it with maxtor.

This is my first...and possibly my last maxtor drive.

Is this true? maxtor is not so good i guess, althought they force it on the market by mass selling it as much as possible. its popular but i'd never like maxtor much to begin with. either really slow quiet, or noisy fast..

WDs were bottom of the barrel not so long ago. I've had several Maxtors that were silent. *shrug* I'm using a WD 160 right now. Silent. I put a lot of Seagates in too. Silent.
Maybe I'm just deaf?
