Loud pop....then nothing...

Well, if it's not one thing it's another. Let me start, and bear with me if this gets long.

A couple of weeks ago a friend of mine started having intermittent problems with his PC that I built him several years ago. I can't remember all the specs off the top of my head but it was like a 1.2GHz Athlon, MSI mobo (I think), etc... The problem he is having is that the PC didn't want to turn on sometimes when he would press the power button. He would have to press it numerous times to get power. Even once it would boot, it would sometimes just reset itself. Then one day, no matter how many times he would press the power button it wouldn't cut on. We bring it over to my place, and I put in a new Antec Smart Power 350W PSU. Boots up on the first try, and he hasn't had any problems since. Great, problems solved! Wrong.

He calls me tonight to tell me that he cut the PC on, heard the fans spin up, the BIOS info popped up on the screen, it started booting, then...... POP!! No video signal, no fans spinning, no power, nothing except for a burning smell and some smoke coming from the PC. He was in a hurry (was actually just going to retrieve his e-ticket in an email for a plane he had to catch tonight) so he called me on the way to the airport. I don't have any other specifics as far as any other symptoms.

I'll be going over to his place tomorrow or later this week to take a look at it. I'd like to at least have an answer for him when he gets back in town. So my questions to you guys is.... what happenend?! Could it have been the mobo going bad all along, and maybe that was a capacitor popping on the motherboard? Do they make a loud pop? He said it was extremely loud. In fact, his wife heard it two rooms away. If it was the PSU, it was a new one from ZipZoomFly that we used, so does anyone have any experience with their return policy? What would be the best way to go about troubleshooting this? I'm thinking of pulling an old 300W out of one of my systems and seeing what happens. I just hope if it was the PSU that it didn't take anything else out with it.

This whole thing is just ironic.... a couple of weeks ago someone posted a message about hearing Antec was having problems with their PSUs exploding. How I hope that isn't true....because I just built several systems using the exact same PSU that I put in his. :disgust: Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

That's what it sounds like to me, too. Personally, I don't consider Antec to be cheap....I take it you don't like them?

I had a antec truepower go out on me. It just all of the sudden made a loud pop and I started to smell something burning. I called up Antec and they gave me an RMA number. So I sent it back to them and they sent me another one. Havent had a problem since.

Yup... sounds like the PSU to me. Same thing happened when I was running a 300W on this computer. Luckily, everything else was fine. Got me an Enermax 430W and all is good =D

Must have had a poor capaciter somewhere, might be the psu? Might not... Anyone Antec is a good company and you should have no problem RMA it.

God, You ain't kiddin' there pal..I brought a work PC home to format and re-install XP on for my employer and no sooner did I get it plugged in and turned on, Then "pop" Goes the PSU. Nothing like that sort of sinking feeling when it is not your machine. Thankfully we had others with the same DEER PSU croak so my employer knew that it wasn't me just screwing around with stuff.

check the capacitors. there was a round of bad electrolyte couple of years back. i heard reports of people hearing a loud pop and finding a dent in their case from a cap popping off. my vp6 just died from failed capacitors

Thanks for the replies everyone! I hope to pick up the PC today and take a look at it later this evening.

Finally picked up the PC this afternoon and just finished taking a look at it. The PSU is fine. I tested it in another PC and it worked, so I put a known working PSU from one of my PCs into his and his was still dead. It wouldn't turn anything on...no fans, no lights, no beeps, nothing. So, based on all of that I'd say his PSU is fine. I don't see any blown capacitors on the board.....are they always visible when they explode? I would think, based on the loud 'pop' sound he described, that there would at least be something visible. Is that not necessarily true?

So my next question is, is the general consensus that the mobo died? If so, what are the chances that it took other components with it? I can always take them out one at a time and test in one on my machines, but sense it isn't my box, and I'm doing it for free, I'm of course trying to minimize my time spent working on it. Is there some specific damage I should be looking for?

Thanks again for all of the help!

Did a little more research on the web and found out that apparently (at least according to this article http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=195) blown capacitors seldom shown any physical signs of damage upon inspection. I did notice that one of the capacitors in the PC did have a slight bulge to it, so I guess that can't be a good thing. I do hope it didn't cause any other component damage...

Blew a one off a Gigabyte board once but was like launching a small rocket. So definately physical evidence present for me. Suppose could be different result depending on how much of whatever the cause. Agreed that mb is probable culprit.
