LOUD retail fan

Forgive me if this sounds like a noob question, but I haven't built my own case in a while. I purchased an Athlon 3200+ retail chip with a stock fan. After building the system, I realize this thing is incredibly loud. Are there any fans you guys recommend that I could possibly replace this thing with? Also, is it going to be a pain in the ass to take the old fan off (it shipped with some kind of thermal "strip" I've never seen before).

Zalman is definitely godly for low noise. Thermalright is great since they sell just the heatsinks, which are extremely efficient to begin with, and you can pick what fan to put on it. Both are a little pricey tho, but worth it if noise is a real concern for you.

The Zalman CNPS7000A-AlCu is a good and comparatively cheap solution and you won't have to bother with selecting a fan. Make sure your motherboard has four mounting holes for the Zalman though. If it doesn't have them, get a Thermalright SLK 900A and a Panaflo 92L1BX 92mm fan. You should also get something to lower the Voltage at which the fans operate, like a Zalman fanmate and run the fans at 5-9V depending on the noise and the CPU temp. When you run the fans at 5V, make sure they start when you turn the PC on. Some fans have problems getting started at low voltages.

Yup, go for the one of the Zalman 7000 series. You can control the fan with the included fanmate, from the BIOS, or with speedfan. The fan starts up and works fine at 5v, even less.

No. Unless its something like the Zalman CNPS 7000A AlCu which screws onto the motherboard. But a standard Socket A heatsink that is attached to the socket itself won't work.

with an assload of thermal adhesive im sure you could. but be prepaired to spend $200 for a new processor when the heatsink rips it out of the socket.

I have heard the stock AMD cooler for the Athlon XP series, and I wouldn't describe it as "incredibly loud". Are you sure you didn't just get a bad fan? I know someone who had a bad AMD fan stock fan - it made a low humming noise that it was supposed to, which is usually a sign of bad bearings. If you bought it locally see if the store has one set up on display so you can see how loud it is, if your's is louder request they replace the fan for you.

yea, is your system incredibly quiet? do you have low rpm fans with quiet psu? because normally amd coolers are drowned out by standard 80mm case fans

Yes, it's a quiet system. That was one of the goals in building it (along with performance and keeping around a $2000 budget). It's in the living room, so I want it to run quietly when I'm watching movies and such.

I purchased a 120 mm fan and even it's quieter than the AMD stock fan. Either something is wrong with it, or it's simply running so fast that it's going to make a ton of noise no matter what.

just to be sure, sometimes the noise can be coming form the chipset fan. and whining noises are from hard drives. did you actaully stop the fans with your fingers to hear the difference in sound when it was on? anyways, lets just assume the fan is loud.

i'd go with a thermalright sp97 and then a 90mm panaflo medium or low speed fan. those thigns are almost inadudible inside a case and the cool the cpu very nicely.

I have 2x 120MM fans and a Speeze Falcon Rock with Biostar mATX in a super LanBoy case. Can barely hear it. Only a very slight 120MM fan whoosh. 31c Idle and 39- 42c load max.
