Loud Seagate drives

I bought a Seagate Barracuta SATA drive, and it's really loud. Almost sounds like a grinding noise. Is this a bad hard drive or are seagates just really loud? Is there a better drive to get? Also, should I just stick with IDE. They are much more simple, for me anyway. Will I really notice a difference betweeen SATA and IDE? Thanks

Seagates are usually very quiet and cool, which is odd. But all hard drives grind when they work, they just don't do it all the time. But you should be using SATA for hard drives now, it's like PCI-e for video cards.

Yeah I know they all grind, but this is way louder than a normal working hard drive.

Yes they are more simple to install. There is no preformance difference, as the limitations are on the hard drive itself and not the SATA/IDE.

Although most people will tell you to get SATA since it is the "future".

The SATA Seagates are supposed to be quite loud. If you want something quieter get a Samsung.

SATA is much more simple to me, well I meant the connector physically. Much more easy to plug and unplug

If you want the quietest drive you might opt for Samsung's Spinpoint drives

Okay, so what is a good fairly large IDE drive? Like 200+ GB? Right now I have one IDE WD 200GB IDE, but that only cause it was cheap. I also have my seagate SATA. Would it be possible to Run 2 IDE drives (having Windows on one of them) and then keep my loud SATA plugged in just to store stuff on?

Yeah, if you dont like the noise the Seagate makes, just put the sucker in an external USB enclosure that supports SATA drives internally.

I would run Seagate's Sea Tools to make sure there isn't anything wrong with the drive first though.

Seagate drives are not loud. Either at idle or when accessing. They are by far the coolest running drives now as well. The unit must be defective.

I also like Hitachi drives. They have very good performance and are very quiet. I'd highly recommend them as well.

Some companies do not allow AAM on their SATA versions of the hdd.

The newest seagates are very loud, and AAM is disabled due to lawsuit.
(Very loud being >28db)

Hmm, I can barely hear my Seagate drive even when its grinding. Also, since Seagate drives are cool, I don't need to run mine with a fan, making the whole shebang much quieter in the long run.

Motor noise should be rougly equivalent for any current production using fluid bearings. More platters will increase noise. Grinding or whining is not normal or acceptable. I would run the diagnostics also and seek replacement regardless. Seek noise is seperate and is largely determined by the AAM/ACM level or lack thereof. Similarly, although to much less degree, Power Management (not the OS's) may affect noise. Also do not neglect the physical mounting, surrounding space and materials. Perhaps test it while placed on something that will not transmit vibration like a towel on floor or desk with anti-static bag betwixt.
