Loud vehicles, why?

I live in what used to be a quiet seaside neighborhood until someone around here got a loud motorcycle.

Now when we try to sleep in on the weekends this un-muffled machine will fire up and get revved and revved. Then he or she will go down the street as loudly as possible, setting off car alarms all along the way.

But of course they're everywhere. Also cars but mostly trucks and SUV's too. I realize a more open exhaust can help performance, but clearly most of these people are after a powerful sound/feel.
If ever I'm out for a walk and one of those bikes accelerates away from me (from right next to me), I know the sound pressure level is beyond dangerous, so I cover my ears whenever I see one nearby.

Here in CA it's illegal to modify any vehicle to make it louder than stock. I believe this is not enforced because plenty of police officers own these vehicles too. I've also seen retired police officer associations that have their own bike club.

It's noise pollution at its worst yet it's so unnecessary. Is it about being noticed? Are that many people that insecure?

And the trend seems to be growing...

I don't mind some noise from a good sounding bike/car/truck/whatever (my car isn't exactly quiet), but what most people put on their harleys is totally obnoxious, and they make it worse by constantly blipping the throttle - or just all out nailing it for that matter.

Some tard nearby was working on his bike at nearly 11 at night and fired it up with straight pipes. OK, I get that you might only have time to work on it in the evening, but seriously come on, there are families with small kids that go to bed early around here.

I like to head up to the Delaware Water Gap for peace and quiet, and unfortunately, so does every Harley owner in northern New Jersey, or so it seems. You can hear them echoing and rattling off the hills all day long. I'm pretty sure there is an inverse relationship between the decibels emitted by the bikes' exhaust, and penis size.
