I recently read that Taiwanese businesses are increasing putting up wafer fabs in China and using more of China's cheap labor to produce our valued chips. Now since most of the techies usually put up the reason for the US to protect Taiwan is because of the chips, would you still protect it even though its not building chips anymore and just a central depository center?

When the Tawainese are sending their valued businesses into China, I highly doubt that they are "anti-China".

Taiwan still builds chips.. and I really don't think that chip production is the only reason US is protecting Taiwan

Exactly. China gov't is communism (sp?), Taiwan is a democratic. If you support China over Taiwan, you are against everything the U.S. stands for.

Hate the gov't don't hate the people.

ssp: True, but its booming economy is one major reason why the US and other countries decide to protect Taiwan. If most of the economy was located else where, would you care what happens to Taiwan. And I really dont get your second post? I am not anti-US, I was just replying to iamwiz82 that Taiwan is not necessarily anti-China because it has vast investments in China. Counter-point would be something like Iraq and US.

fastz28: Well, China is really a communistic country anymore. With it's opening economic policies, it more of a capitalistic-quasi-communist government. So siding with China doesnt mean I'm against everything US stands for.

I don't think it's as easy as who is anti who. Both US and Taiwan (and China too I'm sure) are trying to make the best out of the situation. Plus, if you study the political environment in Taiwan, you'll know that the opinion among the whole population is not unanimous. You are correct that Taiwan is not totally anti-China, and the reason is that there is really no good reason to be at this moment (except maybe if you want to use it as a political slogan to run for an election)

Also, investing in China is not a decision from the governement.. it is strickly decision from the people that do business. There was a news a while ago about the biggest company in Taiwan (or used to be... the Taiwan Plastic CO.) was planning to invest major money in CHina, but was delayed by the government because the amount is too big. What I'm trying to say is that there will always be business exchange, but the political issues are still sticky issues

"i support taiwan since they are anti-china"

China today (for all pratical purposes) isn't really communist either, and this actually does have to do with the Taiwanese...

Did you know what the Taiwanese said when Deng opened China up in 1980?

"Since we can't beat China with weapons, we'll buy it with money."

And that's what they did, and this is simply a continuation of it...
