Thank you to everyone who gave input to my question on TV Tuner Cards.

I love my new tv tuner. All of the suggested cards looked really great, but I went wit ATI cause I have an ATI video card and seemed the best way for me.

It is the coolest thing to see tv on my desk top!

Many Thanks to everyone for your help in my decision.

u don't need hardware encode for standard tv res, its way too low to worry about unless ur pc is really really slow

that being said, should see the hdtv cards..picture is incredible.

TXXXX, If I am understanding your question correctly, there are several options for formates to use when recording. ATI VCR, MPEG, MPEG-4, VTI FORMAT, & Windows Media. I haven't tried to record yet, I am sitll trying to figure out a few other features of interest to me. I'll post back to let you know how it goes when I do try record.

Jdtdragon, Have you used tvshare option? I am tying to get it to work for my daughter who is connected to my pc via crossover cat5e?

Dupunisher, your are hillarious. Actually, I was watching Harry Potter wih my daughter. We had a great time.

Kristi2k, I love the picture quality. I am in a rural area and have to use analogue antenna on my roof to get tv. The picture quality is much better on my pc than on my tv set. With that in mind I would imagine cable would be even better.

OrooOroo, bet hdtv is exceptional.

alm99, I went to ati & downloaded all latest drivers and no difficulties yet.

Anyone considering this definately get the remote version...I am enjoying that very much.

My favorite cool thing to do with my all-in-wonder 9700 pro is play Simpsons episodes in a small see-through window (press F5), then watch it while I grind out experience in Star Wars Galaxies I was so surprised and thrilled when I learned I could watch see-through video while I played a full screen video game. What a card

Wow never even though of trying that. Is that part of ATI's new THRUview or has that always been supported? I know my AIW8500DV can allow you to watch TV through transparent windows, but never tried with a game.

I've never tried that either, I'm going to have to give it a go

UPDATE: I can hear the audio, but the TV overlay won't show for me ontop the game.

If you go into ATI Multimedia Center and chose LaunchPad, one of the icons on the LaunchPad bar is TVShare. Others on the same network are supposed to be able to watch tv, as well. Haven't got it going et, but no time to try during the week.

Does the Tvshare option allow viewing of 2 differant shows, or will both viewers see whatever the actual computer with the tuner in it is showing. And if the answer to that is yes could you then record 1 show on each computer?

Its called Eazyshare, and I don't believe TV Wonder can't be a server, and with 1 tuner you get one show (I don't think it supports Multiview), however IIRC, you can run file player and the TV app at the same time (except for VCR files for some reason).
I've used it with my AIW 9700pro as aserver and my AIW7500 and Sapphire 8500le as clients and it worked, but it was definately a work in progress. (this was back when it launched to be fair)

rbv5, thank yu for the correction on the name, it is called Easy Share tv

Coolred, according to the manual you cannot get a picture-in-picture effect unless you have two tuners. ex: all in wonder video card w tv tuner and pci or usb tv wonder pro.

I am not sure if the Easy Share allows others on the network complete funtionality with the tuner on their pc or if I can just share what I am watching. I am going to play around with my options more this weekend when I have more time. Then I will post back.

They can share what you are watching, schedule recordings or request control from the server which allows them to change channels. It had been a while since I tried it, but it popped right up on the client PC (using a Sapphire 8500le) Here's the client capabilities:

3. A computer to act as the EAZYSHARE? TV Client
Available for any Built By ATI Graphics card from the RADEON 7000 series up, EAZYSHARE? TV provides a local player capable of receiving and playback of live or recorded content from an ALL-IN-WONDER based EAZYSHARE? server.

Users enjoy local control over:
Timeshifting ? pause, restart, rewind or fast forward through buffered TV content. Advanced features include Export to File for permanent storage, Closed Caption, and Still Capture. Maintain buffer contents over channel changes and between EAZYSHARE? TV sessions, to always have content available.
Schedule a Recording ? remote users can request a recording event occur at the server, select input source, and frequency. Scheduling conflicts between users are identified at request time. Easily locate and replay captured content locally, without interfering with other client?s viewing of live TV session.
Standard features ? local control over volume, mute, display options and export to file. Each client may have a separate preferred channel list. Advanced display options like THRUVIEW? desktop or window available, and EAZYSHARE? TV supplies two skins and EAZYLOOK? remote control user interface options.
REMOTE WONDER ? local clients can also enjoy the benefits of ATI?s REMOTE WONDER RF remote control. Support for REMOTE WONDER is fully integrated into EAZYSHARE? TV, including the ability to set unique ids for each remote used in a home setting, reducing interference.

You need another ATi card in the other machine if you want it to work, AFAIK.

The server needs to be an AIW card, but I'm using a Sapphire "powered by" 8500le as a client.

Oh, well, lots of other great things I can do with the tuner.

The ATI - AIW cards do not do any Hardware encoding.

You have to look at cards like Hauppauge 250 or 350.

side question, can anyone recomend a high quality external Tv tuner? doesn't need to have computer connectivity, just the highest possible quality Catv>S-video + audio. Everything I've found so far is centered on sending catv into your computer...
