I love Vista.
I love how it tells me that I've made a hardware change.
I love how it tells me to reactivate Windows.
I love how it tells me that my cd-key is already in use.

Then I call MS and that I haven't made any hardware change . But I have no free phone support since it's OEM. I figured since it looks like a piracy issue that they'd want to find a solution. But no! It's OEM, it not their problem. It's not like they say whether or not I can use windows. That's the OEM's fault.

Now I'm going to have to use MS's email support @ support.microsoft.com. Yay. How many days will that take?! If it takes more than one day for a response, then back to XP I go. I don't have time to deal with this horse crap.

Just phone them,I had an activation problem with my OEM version(short story it was activated online by me , however after 3 months it was asking to be reactivated again(with no hardware or any changes),phone call to Microsoft fixed it.

Known issue they said,they just give you a new key to input .

because obviously he bought the OEM version from someplace online.

Which is what I was getting at, part of the reason that the OEM version is cheaper is because the OEM takes on the burden of support. So if you buy the OEM version yourself you become the OEM and you're your own first level of support.

Right you get what you pay for. If you wanted full MS support you should have bought the retail version not OEM. That being said for most issues there are answers all over the net.

I hate that saying because just about all of the software I use is free and IMO it's much higher quality than most commercial software. And on the other extreme side I've seen a ton of "enterprise software" that has prices in the 5 digits range that is absolute crap.

Yeah because vista ultimate retail is worth the money isnt it. It gives you that nice warm feeling that you got your moneys worth when you boot it up and realise its similar to xp and cost you an arm and a leg. Love that feeling.

In case theres a fanatic vista fan that reads this, my point is the retail versions are a rip off, i know most of the changes are "under the hood" in vista and theres some slight imo differences to xp its been drilled into my head enough already.

Not they aren't. If someone upgrades frequently it's worth it to buy the retail version. I've got a retail copy of XP that's been installed on at least 4 different systems. Why would I want to purchase a new OEM copy every time I upgrade my MB?

I wouldn't blame it all on Vista because the Winblows verification system has been in XP since service pack 1.

Eh, it doesn't matter anyway... I wouldn't suspect that the OEM can handle authentication issues without talking to Microsoft anyway .

Well considering you're talking about the most important piece of software in your system and that it's an OS that you'll probably be using 3-5 years from now I don't think the retail prices are that high. I wouldn't buy another retail version simply because I'm not going to be transferring my OS from system to system anymore. To be honest I'm probably not going to buy Vista myself. If work wants me to learn it they'll buy me a copy. Otherwise I'll stick with Ubuntu and Win XP on my own systems. Both work fine and they're already paid for.

So? That's their job, the whole reason you got the discounted license was because you have to talk to the OEM instead of MS.

Vista Home Premium retail is only as much as like 4 or 5 games and as Robor said, you'll likely be using that copy of Vista for ~5 years so I still don't see how it's that big of a deal.
