Lovely Blue Screen of Death on Winders install

I recently gutted my old athlon system for parts for my new Athlon64 system. The athlon64 is up and running well, but I'm having issues with the old system. Initially I had install issues with the MSI K7N Delta ILSR board, but for the last year and a half or so, i've done half an dozen reinstalls of xp and never had any problems installing it. Now however I replaced the twinx dual channel ram with one 256MB stick of Corsair Value RAM, and replaced my 9800 Pro with a 9200. The install goes fine until the very end. Once it gets to the last minute of install where it is deleting the unecessary files, then goes to the blue screen of death. I have set the mobo to all default settings, verified the memory clock/timings and I still get the same thing. I even ran memtest on it and there are no problems. After all of this I decided to throw one of the old sticks back in just to see if I could complete an install. It again goes all the way through and then craps out at the very end. Has anyone else had this issue and if so, how can you fix it?

Well, if you've changed the memory and it still does it maybe it's the vid card? I'd give that a shot.

Blue screens like that are a bad sign.

check out RAM first is what I'd do.

Remember that AMD64 has some funky restrictions on RAM because of the memory control being part of the CPU die instead of on the motherboard.

Like you can have 3 slots of RAM on some boards, but only 2 can be used for 400mhz (ddr) ram, but you could use all 3 if you used 333mhz (ddr) ram. So be sure to read your owners manual


For testing ram a good tester is at:
http://www.memtest86.com/

You download it and write it to a floppy, or burn a ISO to a cd and boot up with it.

It's not the Athlon 64 system having the problem.

Well it turns out that it was a bad disk. After replacing all the new hardware with stock hardware, and still getting the blue screen of death, I took my brothers copy of sp1 and attempted an install and it completed without incident.
