Go Newegg! I'm not one to jump on these "I hate (insert a company name)" here bandwagons, but the situation with Creative is absolutely ridiculous. I've used their products since the original 8-bit Sound Blaster, and all I can do is look back and say, WTF? Monopolistic practices that pretty much squashed any hope of real innovation in the sound industry aside, their complete refusal to address major product issues, especially in the add-on soundcard biz, just floors me. They've basically given a "Not our problem" response to every major issue that's arisen in the past 6-7 years... the Audigy1's "Squeal of Death/BSOD" issues, the Audigy2 & X-Fi's "Snap, Crackle, Pop" issues, the complete lack of proper driver support for Win2k, XP, and Vista at launch, and the list keeps growing... I purposely didn't upgrade to the X-Fi from the Audigy 2 ZS & 4 running in my main boxes due to the fact that the X-Fi suffers from the same crackling issues that plague the Audigys. The worst of it is that Creative has had the industry by the balls. Who else have we been able to go to for hardware-accelerated sound and the associated enhanced performance in games? It seems to me that due to their relative monopoly on the soundcard interest, they've chosen to put their efforts toward the development of mediocre DAPs and webcams, leaving soundcard customers to fend for themselves. If nothing else, I hope the PR backlash from this forces them to refocus on this neglected part of their product line, if only to stave off the competition.
About the Daniel_K thing... It wasn't hard to see this one coming, but as the current owner of an Audigy4 & Vista x64 Ultimate, I owe the happiness of my ears to Daniel's drivers. Nothing Creative provided could even come close to the features available in XP. I don't and never have expected flawless drivers for a new OS at launch, but come on! We have an OS that's already at SP1 stage, and still we gimp along with half-baked attempts at basic drivers. The numbers of people who've tossed their cards out the window in frustration or who are barely limping along with glorified, 2-channel, non-accelerated sound are growing daily. There's absolutely no excuse, and you can't blame MS for this one, Creative...
