You should go to your local animal shelter and adopt the dog you find cutest/most lovable rather than pandering to puppy mills and genetic inbreeding.

Anything I should know about the adoption process or behavior of shelter dogs?

If the dog has been in a Humane Society style shelter it will probably be desperate for attention. It might need a potty-training refresher (but not nearly as much as a puppy). There's a good chance it will have Kennel Cough. My experience has been that taking a dog from a shelter and bringing into a home environment bonds the dog profoundly to the owner. They do the best they can, but shelters are not generally pleasant places to live.

There are probably Corgi specific rescues out there where the dogs have been fostered in someones home. The breed-specific rescues will probably be more expensive and have a more involved application process. You'll probably get more info about the dog though and there'll probably be less training issues.

What made you decide on a Corgi?

cute, small, loyal, reasonably intelligent, not noisy(I think), manageable (also a guess).

I think huskies are pretty awesome too but I'm not ready for one.

Some are picky and some will adopt a dog to anybody. Really just depends.

So far every shelter dog I've had came house trained. I use to foster dogs for a rescue so I've gone through a lot of them. I hate house breaking dogs so that was a huge plus. My latest adopted dog came knowing how to sit and shake already too. Really make you wonder how some dogs end up in the shelter in the first place.

I got mine from a breeder. I think I found the breeder in the classifieds section of the newspaper.

That's about all I got.

As an owner of 2 corgis, 1 from a rescue and 1 from a breeder, I would suggest looking at pembroke welsh corgi rescues.

cute - yes, easily
small - medium size dog with short legs
loyal - yes
reasonably intelligent - too intelligent, strong herding instinct
noisy - depends on herding instinct; they WILL bark when herding
manageable - depends on the corgi and your skills
