Loving Vista 64-bit!

Put me in the Microsoft haters club. Can't stand the company, can't stand the products. Nevertheless, I like computer games so I'm stuck with Microsoft until Apple or Unix become the operating system of choice for the latest games.

Naturally I wanted to play the latest DX-10 games, so I purposefully built a machine to run Vista when Vista was first released. Since Visa was brand new and was already having massive driver compatibility problems (plenty of blame to go around too--Nvidia and Creative anyone?) I opted to go 32 bit so there was one less "new thing" for me to worry about. I also went with the standard 2GB of RAM since Vista 32 wouldn't see much else with two 8800GTXs combined 1536 MB of RAM hogging a bunch of addressable memory.

I dual booted Vista 32 bit and XP Pro for a few months, then the Vista driver issues got sorted out so I overwrote my XP partition. Vista was running pretty well for me, but I was frustrated by the performance on bleeding edge games and on my benchmarks. I just wasn't getting the performance I thought I'd paid for. Moreover, my computer always did funny things, freezing and blue screening despite the fact that it was running cool and had plenty of power. Eventually, I broke down and bought two more Gigs of RAM, but, as I expected, the extra RAM made no real difference.

After seeing Vista Home Premium 64-bit on sale, I finally bit the bullet, did a complete application drive wipe and attempted to install Vista 64. What a nightmare! Those extra 2GB of RAM drove Vista nuts and I couldn't even get the installation to run without blue screening. After tearing my hair out for four hours, I removed the two new RAM modules and Vista 64 installed in twenty minutes without a hiccup. I was pretty pissed off at Microsoft for neglecting to mention that Vista 64 bit couldn't be installed with 4GB of RAM since that's why most people buy a 64 bit operating system in the first place and I was sure that this little experiment was going to end in frustration like most of my other computer efforts. Nevertheless, I started loading in my drivers and applications and prepared for the worse. The drivers install went very well, but I refused to get my hopes up based on past experience. The proof is in running cutting edge games and I knew that my new 64 bit OS was going to crap out just like my 32 bit OS had so many times before. I even installed Crysis so that the game could taunt me with my fruitless efforts to run my computer like it should.

And then, unexpectedly bliss. Crysis runs much, much faster. Crysis runs much, much, much smoother. Not only that, but my other applications open faster, run smoother, don't crash inexplicably. Computing is satisfying and fun again.

My Futuremark score improved by 600 points to 13604, but that's not the half of it. Everything just runs effortlessly. Not just games, but video and embedded flash in websites. It's all smooth as silk. This is the way it's supposed to be.

So consider this an alternative to everybody who posts here hating on Vista. If you are running the 32 bit version, much of your problems are RAM limitations, particularly if you are running an SLI or Crossfire graphics solution which brings its own memory demands to the OS. You need the 64-bit version.

OK that's it, go ahead and pummel me, but I for one really like Vista 64 bit.

Interesting, but I don't understand the thing about 4 gigs of ram causing Vista64 problems. Are you saying that's a known limitation, or assuming it is from your experience?

There is a known issue with Vista installing on computers with more than 3 GB of RAM.

Microsoft Support Article here.

Installation with only 2GB of RAM installed solves the problem. Installing the hotfix post-SP1 install allowed me to reinstall my other RAM modules.

I had the same installation issues as the other posters. I couldn't even boot Vista after installation until I installed SP1. Once I installed SP1, the hotfix wouldn't install but it did allow me to put the other 2 GBs of memory back in. Vista64 has been a lot better for me than Vista32 was. Less bluescreens and what-have-you.

I just installed Vista64 2 days ago with 4gigs of ram (4x1). Absolutely no issues.

I think that's more of an issue with Nvidia chipsets, but I'm not sure. I installed Vista64 with 4gb without problem also.

I installed Vista Ultimate 64 last week with 4GB of RAM and an nVidia chipset...so who knows. I would expect it to be more of a motherboard driver limitation somewhere.

I'm with ya though. Vista 64 is looking good. I've been on it a week and like it. I just installed Acrobat Reader tonight and ended up getting stuck with Google Toolbar. Vista kept complaining that it was trying to do something so I had to uninstall it. I kind of like and hate the fact that Vista's security alerts you to everything...

Overall, I've only had a few hiccups with 32 bit games crashing for no reason. It's likely due to the graphics drivers....I give it another year and a half and the whole system should be a lot more stable.

I forget what the 4GB issue requires in terms of hardware but the vast majority of users will not have this problem. It's only for specific scenarios with certian hardware.

There's a known issue with certain types of memory controller - KB929777 is the fix.

It was a very dated issue when installing Vista64 with 4gb of ram.
I knew I did around June 07 when installing Vista64 OS.
MS then had issue a patch to fix the issue.

It also doesn't occur to everyone. For instance, my Asus P5K-E with a Q6600 had no issues when I put 8GB of RAM in.

That's true. I installed Vista 64 with 8GB and had no issues. The OS seems to enjoy having plenty of RAM

I've used Vista64 with 4gb and 8gb ram. It worked great both ways. I don't know about any memory problem with Vista64... I use Intel chipsets only when I use Intel CPUs so I'm guessing its a platform problem with Nvidia's chipsets.

I've also installed Vista x64 with 4GB of ram. I've also had no problems what so ever with this OS and am totally satisfied with it. The first OS I've paid for too.

Ya, Vista really isnt worth going to all the trouble of pirating. Not that I would. Just saying this OS is not worth even digging into the possibility. If I wasn't going to use Vista64 I'd probably just use Ubuntu. I don't think I'd consider XP at all anymore, it's a nice low-end OS I suppose.. but I'd just stick with Linux if thats what I needed.
A gaming machine pretty much requires Vista64 IMO, or I wouldn't even bother building a new rig at all. I told myself I was going quadcore or greater, and 4gb or greater on a 64bit OS this trip or I was staying with what I had. Too much effort to put together a new rig if I don't go all the way with it. So contrary to popular opinion, I actually see XP as the OS that's squeezed out from being relevant.. but that's because I see Vista as doing everything XP can and more (and it does it better in my experience).

Obsoleet - sorry to hijack, however how is the freezer pro performing with the Q9450, I have the same hardware on my wish list for my rebuild, but with DS3P.

Everybody keeps saying get the big coolers!!

I love it. It's at 24C as I speak and that's (I'm guessing) pretty good. I couldn't be happier with it. The only thing I'd note is that I had the Freezer 64 Pro on my FX55 prior, and when the fan died Arctic Cooling's tech support out of Germany wouldn't replace the fan. After they suggested some routine fan maintenance which I did, I told them it still didnt work and they didn't reply to my email. So if you could find a domestic hs/fan supplier that is as good as this one, I'd get that myself. Anytime a company isn't US based I frequently find this same scenario for whatever reason.
As it sits though for the price if my story of "lifetime support" doesn't bother you, for the $18 I paid I'm happy. I wouldn't have purchased AC for my CPU HSF after that experience if the Freezer 7 Pro wasn't bargain basement cheap.

What I don't understand is if you already had a 32bit Vista OS why the hell did you buy another copy? Don't you only have one system? If you have 32bit Vista , you can order your 64bit version for like $10 from Microsoft. I have 3 total Vista OS's. That's how I came across both 32 and 64 for each license I own. Stop wasting your money on the product that is causing you so much grief.
