Like I've said on these forums before: GPA is an excellent indicator (most of the time) of who is lazy and who is a hard worker. I will ask the GPA of anyone I hire for my company and it is unlikely I will hire anyone with less than a 3.0.
Your logic is a bit flawed. Many 4.0 students get a high GPA just because they're good at taking written exams and the like; or they are very good at memorizing a lot of information and cramming their brain with info the night before the test. It doesn't really mean that they work hard, or even like to.
Others may study their asses off, attend every lecture, take rigourous notes, and still not be able to get a 4.0 GPA. But it doens't mean they don't have a good work ethic. There's no way to know for sure until you meet them face to face and get an idea of what they're all about.
