i am running win2k sp3..and my ATA100 WD 40gb 7,200rpm drive seems to constantly benchmark below comparable drives and is more in the range of a ata-66 drive benchmark level...according to sisSandra...my HD score is only 19k....any ideas? i read b4 that win2k default to ata-66 but i have sp3 which was supposed to set it to ata-100...anybody know where i can check to see if its under ata-100 in windows..in the bootup screen it says my drives are in UDMA 5..which is ata-100 but not sure how to check in win2k

ok the bootup stuff is irrelavent as far as winders is concerned, That simply says your hardware can run at that speed. In winders your perf could be capped by approximately several bazillion things, bad drivers, incorrect settings, etc ,etc. Get chipset drivers, make sure your write buffer is ENABLED, and get some 3rd party stuff that will help you edit the registry and get your sh*t working the way its supposed to.
Cheers

And I seem to have lied to you. so far this is the best I've found. Though I would assume you've done it, plus it really should only help under load. hang in there a little longer, I won't give up quite yet cause the util was kick ass, no wait! INSPIRATION, is it X-setup? I think it is, off to find and install it. until then read this...:

6. ENABLE DMA: DMA (Direct Memory Access) allows your IDE hard drive or CDRom to access memory directly, bypassing the CPU. This can free up CPU resources, especially when you are running many programmes simultaneously (multitasking), or using very CPU intensive programmes. You may also see this referred to as Ultra DMA, which is basically the same thing, but allowing for higher burst speeds. Firstly your drives must be DMA capable, most new drives will have this capability, secondly, all drives on a particular channel must be DMA capable too. In Windows 2000 DMA is enabled per channel, not per device: therefore if you have two devices on one IDE channel, both must be DMA capable - this is important as some CDRom drives are not DMA capable. To set DMA mode, click Administrative Tools, and then follow these steps to configure the DMA/PIO settings for a controller:

Click Administrative Tools, and then click Computer Management. Click System Tools, and then click Device Manager. Expand IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers. Click the specific controller for which you want to configure DMA/PIO settings. Click the Advanced Settings tab. In the Transfer Mode box, click either PIO Only or DMA if available.

Oh BTW AFAIK there is nothing to tell you what ATA spec you are using under winders, you can only allow it to choose something higher, the driver, theoretically determines what speed it weants to go. It IS X-setup
Xtec (maker of Xsetup) so grab it and see what you can do. and don't forget to make sure you have current chipset drivers....
