My grandpa's eyes are terrible and he needs a new laptop.

Can I get him a model with low resolution to make it easier to see? I found a Dell Inspiron 15 with the following "15.6 WLED display (1366x768)"

That sounds good.

Are there any similar models out there?

Also, how good is windows scaling these days? Last time I tried it (Win XP?) it sucked.

booya

p.s. i use LP3065 monitor - it has two resolutions only 1280x800 (single link dvi) or 2560x1600. I had to go out and grab a nicer video card because the old one only supported dual 24" resolution.

so that is an option to run at perfect 1/2 resolution on a junky 17" laptop - but i'm afraid if you get that $600 hp 17" it weighs so much and he'll fall and can't get up.

there was a dude that wore his ipad around his neck - ghetto fabulous - when they first came around.

iphone os has ability to monitor vitals and detect sudden falls - i spose you could jailbreak it and make an app to keep an eye on him. send data through 3G plan

Just get the best laptop you can with the largest physical screen size, no matter the resolution, and then set it to a smaller fractional resolution.

I know someone who was legally blind who bought a 30" to run at 1280x800

Also, if it runs Windows 7, the text and UI scaling in Control Panel to 125% or 150% is pretty useful as accessibility options.

Yes, there are a number of 15.6" notebooks out there with 1366x768 screens. Scaling works reasonably well these days. I've had to use web browser scaling with my notebook, 15.4" at 1920x1200 resolution. Whoever thought up that resolution on such a small screen... :\

If the "space" is not an issue, and laptop still "powerful enough" for your grandpa, how about just add a large desktop monitor? ( it is not about saving money, but it is actually MUCH better for his eyes )
