Lowes: Cat5e $0.05 a foot

Your local lowes has Cat5e Cabling for $0.05 a foot. I picked up a 100ft for $5 bucks.

Hope this is a good deal for someone, it was for me

Ya they actually have a decent selection of home networking stuff. I was able to get a few things there to run my network at home. They aren't a full blown networking supplier, but they have enough stuff to run a basic home network and provide wall plating and stuff like that.

A crimper is all of six bucks at Home Depot, and the ends are very cheap too, just FYI for people who have never crimped their own cables before.

yeah, crimping your own cables isn't bad if you take your time and do it right.

Still not really worth it to get a crimper, connectors, and bulk cable if you're only going to make a couple of them...unless you have a friend who already has a crimper...

A lil OT but I need to do some work with a telephone wire and maybe some with Cat5. Are there different kinds of crimpers or will one set of crimpers work for pretty much any plug (say RJ11 and RJ45)?

If you get a "higher end" crimper, it will have the ability to do both (ie two inserts for the plugs, or swappable "die" for rj-11 (telephone) and rj-45 (data).

You guys making 100' patch cords (instead of terminating it to a panel and jack) know that that is waaaaay outta spec for Cat 5e, right?

No, more like $16 for shipping. Compgeeks has the most ridiculous shipping rates out there, although in recent months that honor would probably fall to NewEgg.

Any chance you could convince the cust sales reps to crimp it for you? They will cut plexiglass and whatnot... why not crimp some cable. If anyone is going, ask them and let me know

I did see a small box of Rj45 Ends and a crimper on the utility card where the cuts were made.
