right now my quad-gpu cruncher (which crashed months ago), has a Xion PowerReal 800W. No PFC. Unsure of efficiency (no 80plus). But it does have four 6 or 6+2 pci-e plugs on it.

Previously, I had used an Antec EarthWatts 650W with a pair of pci-e splitters.

Neither power supply was ideal.

Can some make a recommendation? Preferably no Rosewill.

Edit: this seasonic looks good.

Seriously? A Rosewill over a Seasonic? There had better be some good reasoning behind that choice.

Edit: That may have been a bit strongly worded. I'm not trying to pick a fight, I'm just curious about the reasoning behind that recommendation, as I've experienced that Rosewill PSUs are generally mediocre.

I did read recently that the Capstone PSUs are made by SuperFlower. I was pretty happy with my SuperFlower PSUs back in my Athon XP days.

In long-past prior decades, my choice of PSUs bordered on thoughtlessness, and of course I paid a price, eventually.

I started looking more closely at comparison reviews around 2005.

I was settling on Seasonic PSUs in 2007. It has become too easy and comfortable to simply stick with that choice, but not much has changed.

I think even PCP&C was using rebadged Seasonics for their Silencer line before they were bought out by OCZ (? I think that's right . . )

That 650W job looks about right without considering your equipment and load requirements, although I'd try to get "Gold" for any special project. But the "Silver," "Bronze" and "Gold" ratings are all about slight differences in efficiency or wasted power.

I've been disappointed by OCZ and Antec. So far, Seasonic has never been any letdown whatsoever.

For the wattage, and as I remember, there was (and hopefully still is) a "PSU" or "power" calculator online. You just punch in the data on your equipment, over-clocks and other factors, and it will tell you what you need. Somehow, 650W seems a little short for four graphics cards, if that's what you have under the hood.

I'm curious why you would equate OCZ and Antec together in the same sentence like that.

Well, they were running just fine on an Antec 650W, and with the Xion PowerReal 800W (non-PFC, probably efficiency in the 70s range), it draws 400W at the wall.

Each GPU (9600GSO 96SP) takes less than 100W full load.

I mostly listed it because you said no Rosewill and I feel the Capstone gets a bad rap from people just because it's Rosewill when it is in fact a solid choice as shown in reviews.
