The new Canon EOS 10D digital SLR is so hard to get a hold of at the moment that few places are discounting. If you do a pricewatch you may see a few lower than $1500, but when you look at the reseller ratings, they are awful, and many of them will only deliver if you buy kits with the camera.

Circuit City are stocking this with direct delivery at $1499, with a free $100 gift card by mail (you could use it towards lenses I guess) which I think is a pretty reasonable deal.

According to their customer service, they do actually have them in stock, which is more than can be said for many online merchants, regardless of what their sites say.

I've been looking out for this to come available at Dell or Gateway (they both sell 1Ds from time to time) to try to get the benefit of the coupons etc, but no joy so far.

You can get CC to give you up to 18mths interest free if you put it on one of their cards, altho I'm not sure how you get that linked up online. I was told to go to the nearest store and get customer service to order it for me (as it is only available direct ship) and they could sort out the financing.

Not the hottest, but the best deal I've seen so far for the 10D, and from a decent mainstream dealer too.

I bought this camera 2 weeks ago. Paid $1358 + Tax at my local 6th Avenue Electronics ( stores are located in NJ and NY) and yes they are a Canon authorized dealer. Went for the 12 mos. financing with their credit card. Very nice camera. Definitely an upgrade from my Canon G2. You can also get it online from their online store at same price plus $10.42 shipping. Dell has a very good deal too if you combine it with their 10% off and other promotion. They don't list the camera at their website but if you give them a call they do sell them. However be aware that delivery of this camera from Dell takes awhile.

The camera doesnt come with a lens, just body so you have to factor it with your purchase. As a startup lens, the Canon 50mm /1.8 is a good choice. Very cheap. You can get a used one from BH photo for $29! If you want a versatile lens, I recommend the Canon 28-135 IS USM. However this will ran you close to $400. Check the Canon SLR Lens and SLR forum at Dpreview.com . You should be able to decide or ask what lens to get with this camera.

The 1.4 50mm is a much better lens than the 1.8 (though I've heard the old 1.8 is good). If you're buying this body, don't skimp on the lenses.

Also, remember that the sensor in that thing multiplies the image size by 1.6x. Thus, for example, a 28mm lens becomes about a 45mm lens--bad for those who love wideangle (myself included), but a great boon for those who do lots of sports or wildlife photography and need large zoom sizes.

Cameras with fullsize sensors can be had, but they are very expensive. I believe the Nikon D1X (~$4000) has a full sized CCD, and on the Canon side, IIRC the 1DS (~$8000) has a full sized CCD.

Not necessarily a bad thing, just keep that in mind. The widest angle non-spherical lens available is a 14mm, which would give you a true focal length of 22.4mm, but again, cost comes in--that lens costs about $1800.

this is definately NOT a hot deal...1499 is the retail price for the 10d...plus, you get to pay sales tax, which ups the price even more!

I'd rather get it from Bwayphoto or B&H...its $1,329.00 over at bway...those are the only 2 NY photo companies that I'd trust...here's the link

I bought this camera about 6 weeks ago from CC. They pricematched the 10% BB coupon on digital cameras that came in the mail. The total was something like $1335 + tax. What was nice about this deal was they had it in stock and CC has a no hassle defective exchange. This is a really nice camera and whatever you pay under retail will be worth it.

Yes, the 1.4 is substantially more expensive than the 1.8. But buying a $1500 camera body and using $80 plastic lenses is silly. Get the Olympus C-5050 Zoom for about $550 if you just want a good digital camera. I have the 1.4 for my Elan IIe system and it is great.

That $80 plastic lens is a sensational bargain and is a very respectable lens. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone. It is a fast lens that is capable of delivering stunning resolution. Just because it is plastic shouldn't be your only reason not to purchase it. We are talking about making great images and if a plastic lens gets the job done, they why not.
