So what happened in that clip in the OP?

Pretty sure that that guy did in fact make an announcement without any information.

Unless the information was just that "Oh look, Tim Cook is gay." Which is outing Tim Cook.

How the hell can you not see this?

No, you're either autistic or being deliberately bloody minded. Theres no way that you think that being outed involves some dossier of evidence.

Thats cute, but you dont actually get to define how things work. I can only assume that youve never watched any mass media or even talked to strangers if that's your definition of outing someone.
I hereby announce that someone has already been to Jupiter and the atmosphere tastes like red velvet cupcakes.

I just "outed" Jupiter's secrets with an incorrect and unsubstantiated assumption!

Yeah, all youre doing there is outing your stupidity or bloody mindedness.

Oh FFS!

Outing someone isn't proving that they are gay, its announcing that they are gay before they do.

YOU CANNOT "ANNOUNCE" THAT SOMEONE IS GAY IF YOU DON'T KNOW THAT PERSON IS GAY. YOU CANNOT. PERIOD.

You can state that you THINK that person is gay.

"Tim Cook is openly gay." -- That's wrong.

"Tim Cook is openly gay...right?" -- A question. Not an announcement.

"Tim Cook is openly gay. What's that? Sorry, folks. I'm being told that is incorrect. He is not openly gay." -- That's a gaffe. A mistake. An error.

"Ladies and gentlemen, Tim Cook is gay." -- That's an announcement. Following that, you are expected to provide new information to support this claim. An assumption is not an announcement. Journalists and public figures who do not do this can get in big trouble. Ever heard of libel?

HOW DOES AN INCORRECT ASSUMPTION "REVEAL" ANYTHING? Facts, direct statements, and evidence can reveal things. Not assumptions.

The guy made a mistake and was immediately corrected. He knows nothing more than you or I about Tim Cook, and can't "out" his secrets any more than you or I.

I'm going to call the press and tell them I've got a HUGE scoop! I can out Tim Cook as a gay man! Because...um...I'm pretty sure he is...right?

Hello?

Earth to Ichinisan?

What exactly do you think happened in the video in the OP then?

You can state that you THINK that person is gay.

Yes, if you do that on TV that would be outing them.

"Tim Cook is openly gay...right?" -- Not an announcement.

No, that's an announcement. Just because you put "...right?" at the end of it doesn't change it.

"Tim Cook is openly gay. What's that? Sorry, folks. I'm being told that is incorrect. He is not openly gay." -- That's a gaffe. A mistake. An error.

Thats called making an announcement then retracting it.

"Ladies and gentlemen, Tim Cook is gay." That's an announcement.

Yes. Yes it is an announcement.

Following that, you are expected to provide new information to support this claim. An assumption is not an announcement.

No an assumption isn't an announcement. An announcement is an announcement, an assumption isn't a public proclamation.

Journalists and public figures who do not do this can get in bug trouble. Ever heard of libel?

Yes I have, and heres the rub. If youre gay and someone announces that your gay and you sue for libel just on the grounds that you aren't gay youre going to have a bad time.

Yeah you do know that the awkwardness was because he hadn't realised that Tim Cook wasn't openly gay not that he wasn't gay?

"WelshBloke is gay!"

There you go. I've "outed" you by your definition.

I have no attraction whatsoever to my own gender. However, the fact that I'm non-sexual has led some people to accuse me of being gay...and those people are wrong. I have not been "outed" for these reasons:

  1. I'm not gay.
  2. Because I'm not gay, I can't be "in" the proverbial closet.
  3. Since I was never "in the closet," I cannot be "outed."

Understand?

WelshBloke, you silly goose. You're gay!

Are you being deliberately obtuse?

If I was gay and you announced on TV that I was gay then, yes, you would have outed me.

Its not fucking rocket science. Outing someone is publicly announcing that they are gay before they do.

Now you can carry on being an idiot about it but I'm going to bed.

Consider: At this moment, Tim Cook is in-the-closet -- every bit as much as he was before that guy made an incorrect assumption.

He's in the closet. In. Not "out."

...assuming he's even gay (and I believe he is).
