I'm just going to jot down some notes on my thoughts of the phone after a night's and a morning's usage. I'm coming from a year with the Samsung Focus S, a WP7.5 phone.
The store I went to had only black and red available, both of which I was considering. While waiting for a rep, they had a black and white unit on display. The red is gloss like the white, while the black is matte. The white was a fingerprint magnet and felt a bit more slick (only very slightly), so I opted to go for the black. I didn't want to develop OCD about keeping the back of the red gloss clean.
My first impression of the phone was how bad the black levels are compared to the AMOLED from my Focus S. This isn't a surprise, but I hadn't considered it beforehand. I'm already getting used to it I guess. I figured I'd mention this first, because it's the only bad thing I have to say.
As I said earlier, the phone is stout but in no way a detriment. It's no heavier than iPhones with Otter Boxes (those are bulkier, too). My wife carried an iPhone with OB and she's never complained about it being heavy or the shape of a brick. The shape of the phone feels nice in the hand. I'm a bigger guy (6'4") with bigger hands and the ergonomics are pretty good. I honestly didn't think I'd like the screen lock button being placed almost in the middle of the right side of the phone, but it works well and is easy to reach with a right-handed grip. With the curve on the sides and the thickness of the phone, it's comfortable to hold, more comfortable than my Focus S.
Back to screen, when I'm not comparing it to my old phone, the colors look great. They don't "pop" but are bright and true. I turned off automatic brightness and set it to medium. High seems to wash out a bit, medium seems perfect for me. I haven't used it outside in daylight yet, that will occur today. As mentioned before, the black levels are poor IMO, but this is completely subjective and is something I typically look at.
Screen sensitivity is great. It does what I want, when I want it to. Resolution is fantastic, I'm really glad to be back on the 300+ ppi bandwagon. Everything looks sharp, icons and text look great. Even with the increased resolution, the OS is snappy, not a hint of lag anywhere that I've found yet.
The built-in Nokia apps are awesome. Some are already on the phone, others have to be downloaded from the store. These apps are the reason to buy the 920 over any other WP8 device.
Other random stuff. The NFC is kinda cool, the phone comes with a sample NFC tag in the box so you can see how it works. The built-in speakers are pretty damn loud. I always kept the volume at 30/30 on my Focus S but on the 920, I've been keeping it around 24/30 so far and could probably go lower. The built-in Nokia ringtones are almost all stupid sounding, IMO there's not really a good ringtone on the phone. I think the last time I downloaded a custom ringtone was when I had a Nokia 10 years ago, so I guess it all comes around.
Loving the phone, not regretting the purchase one bit. Moving from WP7.5 to WP8 is like having a completely different phone. I know that Microsoft did a great job because there's no way I'd ever be able to go back to WP7.5 after using WP8 just for one night.
