So Google's OK to release "half baked software" but MS can't? You sure it's not a case of MS hatred?

Google had the foresight to realize that the smartphone market was changing and they needed a touchscreen focused OS with good app and web support which allowed them to get Android on the market quickly while Apple was still the only player in the modern smartphone market. The early versions of Android weren't perfect but they were good enough and Google did a tremendous job of making rapid improvements to the platform to keep up with and ultimately surpass Apple. That said if Google had tried this strategy in 2011 instead of 2008 it probably wouldn't have worked. You can't start with an incomplete product when the market is dominated by two entrenched leaders who have very robust and mature platforms and essentially total control of the public's mindshare.

I still haven't seen a single Windows phone in the wild after all this time.

I think I'm good to stick it out with my 920. Battery life is now better than my 4s. I've had no problems with pdfs or docs. The phone is so quick and snappy. No lag whatsoever. I'm missing a half dozen minor software conveniences. All of which could be swept up with one good software update. Lack of apps does kinda stink but I'm happy to switch away from apple.

Since my Nexus 4 is delayed, I will be putting my AT&T in my Lumia 920 and using it as my daily driver tomorrow. Hopefully it goes well, I rather like the Microsoft ecosystem.

Some app seems to be seriously draining my battery in the background. Putting the phone on battery saver (no background apps, no syncing) quadruples my battery life. According to wpcentral, it may be Gmail repeatedly attempting to sync contacts and calendar.

Just reading experiences on threads here. It'll scare away people from a system, or seriously make some haters out there. I'm not trying to troll, I really wanted MS to succeed. They're kind of the under dog now, but it just seems like they deadline is just killing them, or their project management has some serious issues.

They need someone like Steve Jobs saying "this is crap, go back to the drawing board". Not to say I'm an apple fan, The only apple device I personally own is a 4s. I'll admit, it's probably the best phone I've had, but it's not the best mobile OS imho. I still think WebOS is probably the best out there, if it had the speed of iOS. I never really liked android. Even when I have my Nexus 7. The EVO 4G gave me a bad taste of android, and I think I'm pretty much done with it.

Anyways, I want MS to fail so they won't be so full of themselves about what to force down people's throats... Instead, they'll listen to people about what they want, and create the system that will be effective, efficient, and fresh. I love the metro UI, but it needs to be efficient and easy to use. Sure it can be efficient, but it sure isn't easy to use. My mom has a WP7.5 with T-Mobile, and an iPad 3. She can use the ipad easily, but she still can't figure out how to use her phone.

I really don't get how you can honestly say it's not easy to use. WP is very comparable to iOS. You have a screen full of icons, you do the same exact method to move them around your screen, you open apps the same exact way. Hell, WP gives your mom an extra tool in listing all of her apps in alphabetical order.

Seriously, how much easier can it get than that?

Besides that, you say Microsoft is forcing it down people's throats. Because iOS is any different? You want Microsoft to listen to people about what they want? They're the only mobile OS developer that has a suggestion site and ranking system. The WP lead said just the other day that they weren't stopping until WP had everything.

I'm very aware that at this point that I sound like an insane WP fanboy, but I promise I'm not. The WP OS has it's issues, but so does iOS and Android. I think you guys are being asinine in your judgment of WP8 (and vi_edit towards the 920). To hear you guys post, you'd think it is unusable when it's quite the contrary.

I should probably just exit this thread and let you guys bitch and moan until the thread dies.

Yeah I don't get the "I want ms to fail so they wake up" comments. Microsoft HAS failed in the mobile category up to this point. I'm a huge Microsoft fan an have never once considered a windows phone until now. Instead I had 4 iPhones. And got tired of the same old crap Apple forces down on you.
I'm rootin for MS big time this go round

Someone at my work had an 800 the other night. It looked nice but I was surprised how creaky it was.

The 920 is anything but creaky. It's a unibody slab of density. Hard to describe. You pick the thing up and it just feels like it is a military grade piece of hardware.

As far as my complaints, outside of the daylight shooting softness, I think most of my issues are OS/ecosystem/App based and not with the Nokia hardware itself. I think my battery drain issue is OS related and not directly caused by the Nokia hardware.

I had a S4 based One X before switching to the Notw and its battery life was great

...

The 800 (or whatever it was) that I held was a unibody as well, which is why I was surprised that it was so squeaky.

Were you expecting it to work exactly like the other platforms you've been on? I've noticed a lot of people that I personally know that bought it are frustrated because they have issues figuring out how to do the same things they've been doing, or which app they need. Not saying you're one of these people, mostly wondering.

As far as the battery, that one is really odd as most people (myself included) haven't had any issues with battery life like you did. I still think that's just a bad phone you got.

Here's a new one I just noticed. Anyone else out there a big calendar user?

When i 'zoom' out to the month view, for every position where I have something filled, it's replaced with what I assume is latin text. So like for today, 3 appointments, when i zoom out to the month view, i see three short lines of what looks like latin. Probably lorem ipsum or something haha. Each one is not the same, some are unique.

-Luke

EDIT:Apparently this is how it's always been..only people just now notice it with ultra hi res phone screens lol. Oh well. Atleast the data isn't actually changing. Everything about the event is stored correctly. I just wish it would actually display the subject or the location instead of latin.

Heh. Somebody else pointed that out too. Front Page used to be like that. The page templates that you could use as building blocks in Front Page used to have a wall of latin text in them.

I really did wish the calendar had a "pinch to zoom" with the actual contents on it.

Yah I'm a heavy calendar user, a few minor qwerks, like ahving to choose a custom time length for an event instead of it just always being laid out like that. Or having to hit more options to get to the details/notes section about the calendar item.

Atleast it learned which calendar to use as the default when creating events!!

Side note. I'm happy to see how easy it is to add words to the "dictionary". I HATE the dictionary/auto correct of the iPhone. I mean most of it is great, but it should learn the words you know. If i type something 400 times, don't auto correct it each time, LEARN IT! hahaha

Ok... almost one week of use... and it's been great! Battery life has been increasing... I'm kinda surprised to be honest. My one x is sucking hard... but of course I have a shit ton of stuff running in the background syncing all the damn time.

I'm still an Android user. Currently have a HTC One X and it's good. Was a former iPhone fan until everybody and their mom got one.

I think I'm going to switch to my Lumia 920 full time, though I'm wondering if I should start giving out my Skype number instead so my phone number isn't tied to a carrier anymore. Google Voice requires jumping through hoops to set up with phone numbers, and there aren't any desktop clients.

Before Lumia 920, I had been using Lumia 800, SGS II, iPhone 4, and N8.

Why to change phones?

I wanted a phone with following requirements

1) high level build quality (excluded iPhone, some Android and some WP phones)
2) high level usability (excluded Android and Symbian phones)
3) aesthetic design (excluded most Android phones and most Symbian phones)
4) affordable price (excluded iPhone and flagship Android phones)
5) good, or the best screen with big enough size (excluded iPhone)
6) good, or the best camera
7) good, or the best sound
8) good, or the best maps

Lumia 920 has all the above requirements.

I didn't look too closely but where is Lumia 920 review by AnandTech, could not find it? Just wondering, are they going to update the SunSpider test list anytime soon, since seems like Lumia 920 topped it

Anandtech takes their time with most articles and doesn't rush to give first impressions.

Your phone requirements list excludes the iPhone 5 because it lacks "high level build quality" and excludes the Nexus 4 because it lacks "high level usability". If I was trying to pick a phone using that list I would end up with a Nexus 4 because it is the cheapest and from reviews appears to be highly usable.

Well my mom picked up a Nokia 822, and I have to say I'm pretty pissed. I'm not sure if it's just a bad phone but NONE of the apps open. All it does it keep crashing back to the previous screen that worked.

Try to do settings or anything like that and it's just a black screen for a while and then back to the previous. I've factor reset it and still the same crap.

I'll take her to go get the phone replaced but so far not too happy with this. WP7 worked flawlessly for me on a crappy Trophy so had high expectations on this one.

Definitely a bad phone. One thing I have been impressed with on my 920 is how solid wp8 has been so far. Haven't had a single crash

How do you like the build of the phone and the feel of it in your hand? I'm looking at 822 or Odyssey on Verizon once they finally unveil it.

I like it, it feels a lot better than my Trophy does. It doesn't seem too big either and I kinda like the rounded edges of it. I'd like to see it against an 8X though, which tomorrow or Monday we'll do to replace this one. The 822 felt solid though.

A quality 10-page review from AnandTech takes 1-2 weeks at least. It'll come.
