This demo of the low light shooting challenge they had set up is pretty cool: http://www.wpcentral.com/nokia-takes-photo-challengers-against-lumia-920-pureview

I wonder how good the pictures look when you pull them off the phone, if the camera turns out to be as good as they're hyping it to be then I'll probably pick up one of these. I still have a few small complaints about WP (like no gapless audio playback) but I could live with those to get a great piece of hardware like this is looking to be.

Too bad it's said that VZW might only carry the Lumia 820 rehashed as the Lumia 822.

If VZW doesn't get the Lumia 920, I'll consider jumping to AT&T. I can't believe Verizon won't allow other phones on their network yet. It's so annoying that they haven't even tried to scratch the surface of their "Open Door Policy" that they talked about 4 years ago. :l

http://gizmodo.com/369961/verizons-open+door-policy-what-it-actually-means

I understand it's a problem with the technology, but if they didn't have to vigorously test every phone they ever get, and then CONTROL the hell out of it, we'd be able to use any phone we want because manufacturers would then build more CDMA/LTE devices.

I hate Verizon with a passion with regards to their control problem, but I love their service.

I want the 920. :l

It's not that Verizon won't allow other phones onto their LTE network, but because their LTE bands are specific to them, a company would be nuts to built a phone that can only work on one carrier and expect unsubsidized sales to actually get them somewhere in the United States. Google tried that with the Nexus One and Nexus S, it failed horribly.

You might get a lot more success if you sold an unlocked phone that worked on multiple carriers LTE networks in the United States, but the radio chipset that would support that many bands is only now being produced in volume. And it would need to be a really kick ass phone as well. But because of the way cell phone plans are set up, the only carrier where you come ahead financially with that method is T-Mobile. Our system is totally screwed up.

I will say this for Apple, when they finally get around to announcing something at least you know you'll be able to get your hands on it (assuming sufficient supply of course). I would be interested in taking a look at the 920 in person but by the time it's actually available in stores I doubt I'll care anymore.

This exactly. If they want to compete with the current competition they have to deliver like the competition. It's almost like a Palm release, it'll be out "in the following months" lol and by that time the next revision of hardware will be out.

Yup, Palm delivered amazing new features that are now standard on smartphones, too bad they didnt deliver the hardware to go with it.

I'm not really sure why anyone expected this to be released soon, though - Microsoft has said that WP8 would launch just after W8, which hits the shelves October 26. Some might argue that Nokia should have delayed their announcement until closer to then - but that aside, people seem like they were expecting a launch next week, when they already knew it wasn't happening.

I think that some people were expecting them to at least announce a shipping date, and a price.

Shipping date is after October 26th. Price is probably going to be $199 or $249. It's not as if it's hard to guess these things.

If someone is easily swayed by whatever the find cool first after they are eligible for upgrade, then no one would wait for a new iPhone.

Some people that don't rely on contract upgrade cycles to get new phones would like to know. Hard to believe, but some people like to get new phones every 6 months or less, and if this one is still 2-3+ months out, well that stinks.

I upgrade every few months. I understand wishing it were coming soon - my point is we already knew it wasn't.

The 920 is thinner but wider than the 900. Take a look at the specs to see for yourself: http://www.theverge.com/products/compare/6082/4624

And it really should be noted that companies cannot defy physics. In the industry's rush for thinness, they have compromised on what camera performance could have been. I don't care about a thin phone, I want high quality pictures because my smartphone is often the only camera I have with me.

The GS3 is 8.6mm which I presume the Ativ S will be.
Not saying the GS3 camera is better but it a pretty damm good one.
When you are competing for the consumer's business, it needs to be better in some way.
Like I was saying, Nokia has some cool features but as of right now, the Ativ S looks more attractive to me.(And I don't mind saying I'm a Samsung hater).

It would be lost in peoples minds after the iPhone. I phone controls at least 2 weeks of the news cycle, maybe even 3.

I think we will find out more in early October, latest probably Build.

Certainly looks promising.

Not sure I'd trust Nokia PR at the moment though.

The Ativ S does look like a really nice phone as well, I think it looks a lot better than the GS3 in terms of build and design. I'm more interested in the 920 though since it's supposedly bringing some new hardware tech such as the screen and wireless charging, while the Ativ S is basically just a GS3 with a better body and WP8 installed.

Well it's the difference between an ad and a live demonstration, honestly I think people are blowing that whole ad thing way out of proportion considering how fake some other cell phone ads are. They also released another video of the OIS in action side by side to a GS3 and it looked pretty good to me, obviously not as good as that ad but still a big improvement.

Not seen that video. Did they have IS switched on on the S3?

Edit: And that video was over the line misleading.

Not sure if they had IS on or not, they don't mention it's a gs3 even but you can tell in the picture they show of the apparatus that both phones are attached to.

Anyway here is a video of it: http://conversations.nokia.com/2012/09/06/an-apology-is-due/

In the end I guess I just don't care much about commercials, this one doesn't seem any more fake than Apple's siri ads to me. I'll pick up this phone for all of the other enhancements they claim to have made, if it doesn't live up to them I'll end up returning it it's not that big of a deal.

I dont know about the IS or the questionable commercials. But this isnt faked

http://images.anandtech.com/doci/6236/DSC_7972.jpg

Its a damn good camera

I'm sure it is a good camera but after the OIS AD fiasco (and the whole wp7 upgrade thing) I'm not sure I trust Nokia not to have set that camera up specifically to be good in dim light (upped the ISO etc).

Still we'll find out when it gets released to reviewers, until then I'll reserve judgement.

i find it hard to believe until i actually play with the device in person.
if you look at the lumia 920 capture, there is a white glow behind the vase and its about as bright as the white pedals, yet on the gs3 capture, some of the white pedals were exposed, yet the background is completely black, no trace of a white glow, how is this possible? perhaps it was a a poor viewing angle on the phones?
