In this case it isn't comparing other display technologies, it merely points out that improvements have been made to enhance it and make it more useful.

As a consumer, I rather have more options than being limited by them. One choice doesn't fit all kind of thing comes to mind.

Yeah but you dont have a choice anyway.
The only company I know that released two versions of the exact same phone was HTC. It was when they made the HD7 and then the HD7S. Exact same phone, one was LCD the other was super LCD.
And it was WP7, which wasnt exactly selling like hotcakes.

HTC again, they sold the original Incredible with a AMOLED display, and then switched to SLCD after a couple months due to panel yields I think.

I actually had both versions sitting on my desk at one point. There is a noticeable difference in the displays (the SLCD is better looking to my eyes, the AMOLED is too pixelated).

I got my Dinc 2 back in June of last year and the screen really is stellar. It's not HD, but you really have to try to find the pixels on it.

But yeah, I just hope they make some things better for WP8 (integrations, apps and Bing not sucking) and I might really consider the 920.

I don't understand people that say that Bing sucks. What search results is it NOT returning that Google does? I don't really have any issues with Bing. The Bing driven search functions, like Music Search, Local Scout, Bar Code search were all stellar on WP7. The driving directions weren't terrible, they just weren't turn-by-turn. I will say this much, it did have handy things like 'Turn left at Franklin St (Exxon on corner) and I always thought that was a nice touch. My friend has a Lumia 710, and the Nokia Drive on there is pretty decent.

But isnt the LED brighter in direct sunlight?

I hate that Nokia phones never have Tmobile 3G bands. I am not giving up my $30/month plan.

I never really ran those kinds of comparisons. All that I know is that the SLCD produced a much nicer looking image that didn't look jagged or aliased.

Camera is nice but the wireless charging is meh to me. I'd rather just plug it in and still be able to use it at my bed or desk.

I believe Nokia is trying to get major coffee chains and the like to have those wireless charging pads (I suppose they would integrate them into coasters). Engadget Link

They currently have Virgin Atlantic's Lounge at Heathrow Airport and The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf (in the US) on board with the idea. Imagine if Starbucks or McDonald's gets on board with this. It would be pretty cool and a compelling feature.

I don't know about the US but cell phone charging stations have been pretty popular here over the past decade (India). Practically every mall, ice cream shop, coffee shop etc. typically has a 'charging station' with a dozen or so assorted charging connectors (microUSB, miniUSB, Apple 30-pin, proprietary feature phone connectors etc.) in a corner somewhere. Supplanting that with wireless charging at your table would be a great value add.

Almost everyone knows a guy who frequents a particular coffee shop, not necessarily for great coffee but free Wifi. Now you can have free Wifi and charge your phone at the same time.

That's a pretty cool use for wireless charging.

Is most wireless charging compatible? There's a few different types out there, would be nice if that system could charge them all.

They are using the Qi system. I'm not particularly knowledgeable about it but it's been around for a few years. I believe there are some Android phones that support the standard (either OOTB or with replaceable backplates).

The Lumia 920 is nice, but I just had a look at the HTC and I think I may go for that instead. Any thoughts?

Gotta say that this phone interests me, but I'm scared to invest any money into the MS mobile realm. So many apps that I would want are either not available or limited in function in Win7 mobile. I guess they got multitasking to work better in Win8, but right now there is so little info available about what what Win8 can do it's hard to get excited about the OS or it's devices.

I'm fairly heavily integrated into the Apple ecosphere, but their products, iOS features, quality issues, and general direction is starting to grate on me.

Would consider buying the 920 off contract. Rumor is it being priced at around $520 or so for a 32 gig device. It has SD support, by all accounts one of the best cameras ever offered in a phone, and is a fun looking device. Screen is also supposed to be very responsive. Things I would trade for over the loss of integration of not being on an Apple device any more.

Well this would explain the thickness of the phone. My only issues with the phone are it is just to wide and long. That and they should of taken advantage of the thickness and put a monster battery in there. It is the same size as a S3 that has a bigger screen. The titan was to big for me to use 1 handed. That could of been a issue with the titan being slippery.

AMOLED panels are thinner than IPS displays, but use a lot more power displaying white (basically all web pages). You also need space for the inductive charging coil and have it large enough so that the current generated charges the phone in a reasonable period of time.

The good thing here is you have options. If you want something thinner, the HTC 8X looks like a great choice. If you want more features, the Lumia 920 will be available as well.

Lumia 920 has me sold so far, I do like the HTC 8X though as well. We'll have to see as they come out, I've been a hold out from smart phones so far(still have a samsung flip phone) and I have a feeling I'll still feel no need for one after these are released.

Source? I don't dispute the res/PPI/refresh rate data, but I'm wondering where the data for reflectance and such comes from. Better yet, a general overview of outdoor performance of multiple mobile displays would be cool.

Answering my own question. Here's some hard data about brightness and reflectance:

Nokia Lumia 900: 395 cd/m2, 4.4% reflectance
Lumia 920: 600 cd/m2 (listed), ? reflectance
Galaxy S: 354 cd/m2, 4.4% reflectance
Galaxy S3: 224 cd/m2, 5% reflectance (yes I double checked this. The S series delivers progressively worse outdoor performance the further you go: http://www.displaymate.com/OLED_Galaxy_S123_ShootOut_1.htm. The compromise is in increased battery performance, as AMOLEDs guzzle power. This makes sense because longer battery life sells more phones. Duh.)
iPhone 4: 541 cd/m2, 7% reflectance
iPhone 5: 556 cd/m2, 4.6% reflectance

Brightness and reflectance are complementary; the more of one you have, the less of the other you need. If Nokia can deliver a display close to that brightness, it should edge over the iPhone 5 even if the reflectance doesn't change (though it's claimed that the new display delivers lower reflectance).
