Are you talking about wireless charging stone? The OS? The camera? The functionality?
The hardware stabilization is new as far as I know although it does remain to be seen how good it is. The touchscreen that can be used while wearing gloves or using your fingernail is a first as well. It depends on what the iPhone 5 offers but those features could be enough to at least make it a real option instead of the iPhone. Amazon apparently isn't ready with their phone (if they are working on one at all) so that's one less competitor against these Nokias.

Is it wrong that I still want the Lumia 800 more than this thing? Even with the dead-end OS that is on it?

I can get an unlocked Lumia 800 bundle on the Microsoft Store for $600. That includes the phone, a bluetooth headset, a wired 'cans' style headset, and a wireless speaker (think Jambox). I keep thinking about it for when I drop AT&T.
It definitely seems to be more of a smartphone for the European market. Smaller screen and no front facing camera, but more sleek and probably a better feel in your hand. Most apps in the near future will still be WP7 apps because they run on WP8. My guess is that it will probably be next fall before WP7 is mostly abandoned.
Something is wrong with you.

I can't wait for WP8. I really like WP7 so I'm sold, I'm just glad to see some much improved hardware for it. The HTC Trophy not the greatest, but I don't really notice it due to how smooth the UI is and how well WP7 runs on it.
The Trophy is the phone that could in my book. I've had it since release week and while there is absolutely nothing special with it, it's just a solid device. I still show it off when people mention Windows Phone (rarely though) just for people to see the fluidness of the UI in person. It's a year and a half old device but all my friend's Androids seem to self destruct within a year, but that could be them being idiots. My dad's Droid X from about the same time is still going, but he's constantly bitching about it.

That being said, I'm not sure if I can wait until my contract renews to get a new phone if Verizon gets some form of the Lumia 920.

I would be more interested in it if it was confirmed coming to Verizon. No way am I switching to AT&T.

Pretty sure it will come to Verizon. This is the Phone to save Nokia, they are going to need all of the carriers they can get. BTW, I am hopefully going to be able to get rid of my Galaxy S(AKA fascinate) it has Android 2.3.4 Force-close edition.

not stable yet. I would love it if any of the Galaxy S phones/tab can get JB stable because I love the Wolfson audio hub....unfortunately..I just don't have the time to play with ROMs anymore especially if they have so many problems..(my Galaxy S devices are T-Mo Galaxy Tab, Infuse, and Captivate).

I am looking forward to Windows 8.

I hope it does come out by the time I'm up for an upgrade for Verizon (February). Or do you think by that time something new and probably better would be out by then?

I doubt anything better in the ways of WP8 would be out by February, there will probably be some newer android phones with the newer hardware though. They did mention the quad core krait with windows phone at some point though, who knows when that'll come along.

There are probably 3 things I wish that could be better with WP8 (for my preferences):

1. Better app market: Nothing huge like iOS or Android, but a really good selection of good apps and games that can rival what's on my phone right now (and what I really do play a lot).

Weird... I was going to try for 3, but off the top of my head, I can't think of anything else right now. I was going to say customize but how the UI is set up, it actually eliminates the idea of needing an actual background. I'd prefer something other than IE, but if it works very well on the phone, I won't complain. Personally I hate Xbox (and Xbox Live), but I noticed you can remove that from the home screen, so no big deal. Also, I know very very few people who actually use Windows Messenger, so that's something that can be chucked (I basically use Steam, Skype and Facebook to communicate most of the time, rarely on Yahoo).

Outside of that, I like what I see.

Skype is on Windows Phone, but as of 7.5, it would not background meaning that unless it was active you wouldn't see your messages or incoming calls.

IE on the phone actually is pretty decent, my only beef with it is that they got rid of the Find On Page that was in 7.0 and 7.1 but they removed it in 7.5 when they update it to Mobile IE 9 with a new engine. 2 steps forward...

I would be interesting in seeing if you could do more with the tiles beyond 1*1, 2*2 and 4*2. See if you could do 3*1 and whatnot, though I suppose the apps would have to support it.

My local Best Buy does have a Nokia 900 to play with (non-dummy). Do you think that would be a great starting point and something to play with to really get the feel of the OS or would that be a bad example?

Don't. Unless you can get it for super cheap, there's no point. It wont be getting WP8 (WP7.8, which is only the new UI as far as I know). And overall it's just outdated hardware.

No I mean, just play with it. There's a working one (kiosk) at my local Best Buy. I'm not going to buy it, I'm asking if it's something I should play with to really get a feel for the phone?

The problem with Windows Phone is it really only works best when you are signed in with YOUR account. All of the apps then populate with your data which is what makes the OS awesome to use. What you really need to do to experience Windows Phone is to go to a Microsoft Store in your area if you have one. They'll actually have demo units available with mock data which allows you to get a lot more information out of your time with the unit.

You can at least get a feel for the interface that way. Most people are very surprised at the smoothness of the OS when they actually get to play around with one.

And the Nokia Lumia series is very solidly made. If there was an Apple logo slapped on it instead of Nokia most Apple fans wouldn't question it.*.

*Not having a go at Apple, it's just Microsoft failed with marketing on the WP7.

I always find it kind of funny when people say Apple products are solidly built, yet they always find some way to break on the outside or some internal break (antenna problems of the past). Nokia has proven they can come out with a phone that can probably survive a nuke blast... maybe outside the EMP that is lol.

Well, I probably should have phrased it differently. I meant that the aesthetics are excellent, like Apple's. I haven't tested the durability of any iPhones personally. My HTC Trophy is probably the most durable phone I've owned. Many accidental drops, never any damage or problems at all.

The Lumia 900 does seem fairly durable, but I haven't tested it either. I did have a Lumia 700 at one point, and that did take some drops fairly well.

My Droid Incredible 2 (with a cheap ass case around it) is durable as hell too. Lots of drops and smacks and whatnot.

The phones are well designed, glass is just too prone to breaking. Fixed in the iPhone 5 though.

I personally think it has a very good app selection. It's missing a few big name apps (Instagram, Draw Something, etc.) but most of those will be out by the end of the year partly because Nokia is paying for the apps to be made. 100k apps is quite good though and they all run fine on WP8. My only complaint personally about the store is that the apps are usually more expensive on WP than on iOS and Android but I understand it's a smaller market right now.

Why do you hate Xbox though? It provides a good games platform and almost all of the Xbox titles are high quality. It's mainly just a games hub in WP7 (it's actually just called "Games") and having an Xbox Live account won't do anything for you...for now. They are going to push Xbox more in general with WP8/Win8/WinRT so we'll have to see what the overall picture will be, but it appears like it's going to be a unified entertainment platform for all Windows devices. It will allow for some interesting stuff between console, PC, tablet, and phone. Xbox Smart Glass (http://gizmodo.com/5915553/what-is-xbox-smartglass) could be pretty cool if they get around to pushing it.

Facebook messaging is built into the messaging hub (including texting and live messenger like you say). Skype's going to be deeply integrated into WP8 (Microsoft owns them so it's about time) so I'm sure Skype messaging will be in there as well. Skype itself will feel a lot like how normal phone operations work.

In general, WP7/8 tries to integrate more core features into the phone itself rather than relying on the use of apps. A classic example is taking and uploading a picture to facebook. From a locked phone, all you do is hold down the picture button for one second to put the phone in picture taking mode, press the picture button again to take the picture, slide to the right to view the picture you took, tap the option bar on the right, and tap share on facebook (or share via text, twitter, email, or any other app that has a sharing function). You can even put a caption or tag people in the photo. It's hard to describe but it's very fluid and it's has this from the very beginning.

It's just a personal thing. I really just don't give a crap about Xbox. I have a gaming PC, PS3 and Wii (which I barely use). I hate Xbox more on the idea of how it's managed (especially the market) and also of the players as well (so many people to hate). But that's just me feeling this way. Outside of wanting to play Halo, I really don't care much about the other games on the 360.

But how all those things are integrated are really nice. I just hope to GOD there is going to be a Steam app for WP8 by the time I'm ready to upgrade.

Another thing is that I'm really not much for Bing. I'm really that attached to Google to be honest. Gmail, Youtube, Apps, etc.

I'm a big fan of WP7 and a fan of Microsoft's projects lately, but I still don't like Bing. I see no reason to switch to it.

Oh, and that brings me to the absolute biggest flaw of Windows Phone 7, and I know I can't be the only one that has this problem because I've let friends use my phones and they've done it too: the damn dedicated (touch) search button.

I can't tell you how many times I've inadvertently activated it on more than one Windows Phone. Just quickly picking up the phone, doing tasks in landscape mode, browsing on the phone, etc - it doesn't matter what, but at least once a day I'll hit the button by accident and it will bring me to the built in Bing search.

Now while I do appreciate the daily image and fun facts on the Bing WP7 page (they are beautiful shots and interesting facts, to be sure), I hate being taken there while I'm trying to do something else. The search button should be a hard press button or be harder to activate (like a long key press). Granted, this isn't the biggest problem in the world, and it can usually be avoided by me, but it is the biggest issue ive seen after many, many hours on the Dell Venue Pro, Lumia 700, and HTC Trophy and persistent despite updates. The OS is smooth as butter now otherwise, and browsing, while not as fast as iOS or android, is at least acceptable.

I've also accidentally actiavted voice activation (hold down Windows/home button) but that's not as frequent anymore.

It's really weird, the OS is so nice and would love to play with it, but how connected Google is when it comes to desktops, mail, phones and so on is really damn nice. Curious, since I don't know, can you find a program you like on the Google Play site (or whatever is similar for MS in this case) and make your phone download and install a program you want it to have from your desktop?

Also, I would think the search button being easy to press would be more of a hardware problem than a software problem wouldn't it? Unless the digitizer is a bit weird? Dunno...

The Zune software used to have a way of browsing the marketplace but they took that out a little while ago to transition everything over to Win8. There is a website for the store though to buy/send apps to your phone: http://www.windowsphone.com/en-US/store
