Anyway to sideload apps on WP7/8? I assume no, but maybe that has changed. Do you think they will be able to in the future once the phones get more mod support?

I don't want to pay the $100 to be developer unlocked.

I believe they have quoted mid 2013 as the completion estimate.

It's not if the OS can be unlocked, but if the phone can. Furn'stance, my HTC Titan (running WP 7.5) can be unlocked + have custom ROMs installed, but not the Titan II (also running WP 7.5).

It really depends on how popular the phone is - and seeing that the 920 has quite a bit of anticipation building up towards it, there's a decent chance that it will be unlocked once it is released.

Other than stuff that's probably mandated by MS (the UI, the buttons), they aren't clones.

That's the 920 on the left there, not the 900?

They both look too stinking big (especially in width). I wish the 8s had better specs. Since I intend to buy my next phone for full price, I want to make sure I am getting my money's worth.

Nope. You can tell the difference if the UI is up and running. In all promo shots of WP8 they always want to push the feature of multiple sized icons on the desktop. If you see a teeny square icon next to a big square icon, thats the new OS.

That's right, I had forgotten about that. I stand by my statement that they are both too big for me though.

I've had a few minutes to play with this phone. WP8 has some serious polish. It's really, really nice, enough to kind of make me want one. Everything in the OS is pretty smooth, the layouts are clean, there's some cool message/social media integration, the camera is nice. The phone is also really well built.

Where did you get a chance to play with this phone? Also maybe some more impressions how is the size? On paper it really concerns me the phone seems to be huge. Does it feel smaller than it really is or is the size a issue?

Unfortunately any hope I had of buying retail and taking to Straight Talk were squashed this weekend. Had some friends over this weekend with AT&T iPHones and they had at most, one bar of signal in my home and depending on where they were none. Damn.

I get a full signal strength on my wife & I's iPhones in our house with Verizon.

I'm not really sold on the HTC 8x in terms of features or price. And Verizon has been positively mum on any word regarding their WP8 lineup.

Looks like a Note 2 is going to be bought in my near future.

Apparently the link to pre-order the lumia has been taken down, but the 8X is still up. I guess you can use direct links to get to the order page for the lumia but the links to them have been taken down. No one knows why yet though, maybe Nokia asked them to take it down or something.

I was impressed by the pricing. $149 contract price for arguably one of the more interesting/featured phones to be released seemed quite competitive. Heck even the full retail price of $599 seemed quite a bargain compared to what HTC was charging for the 8x.

Best Buy unsubsidized pricing != retail unsubsidized pricing.

For example, Best Buy sells the Galaxy S III for AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint at $699 (16GB version). They are $549 from the carriers and Amazon.

Yeah I thought the price for the lumia 920 looked like a good deal too. If it follows the trend of the gs3 and the carriers sell it for less at full price than best buy it could be a really good deal at like 500-550$.

So it was released in Canada today and some people are posting pictures up from their own devices. Really not impressed at all. A LOT of grain and very, very soft images. Not sure if it was over hype by Nokia/Media/my own desire...but right now the images trickling are pretty underwhelming. I'll reserve judgement completely for some of the more technical/formal reviews to hit with a true side by side of other devices. But it would not surprise me if the 920 is thumped by the iPhone 4s in all but ultra low light conditions.

I roll my eyes at Canadian photography skills good sir!

Being on Verizon though the HTC 8X looks much more compelling to me than the 822. I would like the 922 but so far that's just a rumor that Verizon will get it as far as I know and maybe just wishful thinking.

Yet the keyboard is horrible compared to Android and iOS and there's no way to install a different keyboard. I do need a good keyboard for my txting and messaging stuff.

Well, taking a shitty picture is still going to be a shitty picture. IIRC that comparison TheVerge (i think?) did was pretty favorable for the camera over all the major competitors. But it's not magic either. Unless they've also got a better looking shot from another device there I'd be inclined to assume people just suck at using cameras imo.

There must still be some kind of embargo on reviews for the major players, however some smaller sites/individual users have trickled out some initial reviews. The handful that I've read are all saying the same. Noisy, soft, overhyped. Except in low light conditions in which it is much better. The front facing camera also appears to be significantly much lower quality than the 8X.

This thing was hyped up as the second coming of the camera phone and so far hasn't really delivered in limited samples I've seen from "normal" people. And that *does* matter to me. I'm a normal person and would like to know how a phone's camera does under normal use.

I'll still reserve final judgement until more professional reviews come out.
It's still got some great things going for it - namely Nokia apps, a great screen for outdoor use, and high touch sensativity. But the one major selling point seems to be somewhat oversold.

Those are horrible I really hope that was someone intentionally taking a bad pick with the 920 to make the Iphone 5 look better. If that really is the quality of the camera bye bye W8 and hello to a nexus 4.
