We have lunch at work meetings all the time - the admins never get in on that. The admins aren't the ones giving up their lunch hour.

By legwork you mean everyday job description?

This. The idea isn't to order lunch for everyone at the office, it's only about comping the poor souls who got ordered to give up their own lunch break for a meeting.

My company does both: we'll have lunch meetings or "lunch and learn" days, and sometimes we'll also have food for the whole company with no meeting.

That's pretty shitty that she's getting singled out. We do lunch ever Thursday and everyone gets to be a part of it.

I'd say it just depends. If she is literally the only person in the office not in the meeting, then dammit she definitely should be offered lunch. That's just rude.

But if there are other people also not getting the food, then that's perfectly fair IMHO.

But, who is picking up the lunch? The office admin, or the receptionist? It's a little vague in the OP. If the office admin is picking it up, it's questionable. She's doing her job. If she still gets her own lunch break, then I'd say no, but if she is also sacrificing her break to go pick up the food, then yes, she deserves to be offered a meal as well.

Maybe I'm understanding this wrong. I read it as the company bought lunch for everyone BUT the receptionist; meeting or not.

Here is some information about the specific situation.

She is the only admin type person in the office, so there are no other admins that will get upset about her getting a free lunch.
There were other people in the office that were not in the meeting, so she wasn't the only one to not get lunch.
She only has to get lunch maybe once every 4 months, so it's not like it's going to add up to a lot of money.

From that, it looks like the ppl in the meeting get lunches, since its called a lunch meeting.

I kinda get the feeling this is like giving the pizza delivery guy a slice cuz he brought you the pizza to begin with. Why don't we feel guilty about the pizza guy too?

Presumably it's a working meeting, and the lunch is for the people doing the work in the meeting. Her job is to go get the lunch. I don't see any implied obligation there. Personally I would get her lunch, but I don't think it should be expected.

Nice gesture, but certainly not expected, nor is it the norm. Delivery is the norm, so... that's the real solution.

When she goes to get the food, is she using a company vehicle, or her own vehicle? If her own, she should definitely be getting a lunch. It would be similar to tipping a delivery driver, who is using his own vehicle.

It depends on whether she gets a lunch break later after helping with the meeting.

I see investment in keeping the peons in their place, can't have them expecting things like food.

Whenever we have a "meeting" worthy of food orders with a receptionist picking it up - we usually do a mass "Catering" type of order... in which the receptionist can certainly have plenty because tons will be leftover.

My answer, regardless, is yes... Yes you should buy the fucking receptionist a god damn lunch if she is picking your shit up for you. Something tells me the company isn't re-reimbursing her for the mileage cost and gas cost of her picking it up.
