I have an Abit LX6 witha PII 266 , 64M ram.
I am considering upgrading it to tide me over till I can afford building a new system.
The question is what CPU should I go with.
The most recent bios will allow Celeron 466.
I was planning on putting a Celleron 466 in a abit slotket with another 64-128 meg ram depending on $.
However the 466 celerons ar getting harder to find. I could not find anything on using any of the faster cpu's insted of the 466. I am not sure what the new Bios will take for speed and voltage. I would consider some moderate overcloking but what speed processor would be best.
Any recomendations would be apreciated.

I doubt if C-466 worth the cost, since LX mobo is really, REALLY slow by comparison.

Try save little more and get a Duron setup.

I have a celeron 500PPGA running at 608 in an Abit LX6 on my girlfriends PC. I originally had it in an Abit Slotket but it never worked. I tried an ASUS Slotket and it has been working ever since. Seems to be rock solid.

I also have an LX6. It really was an excellent Mobo in its day but unfortunately that day has come and gone. Its major limitation now is that it will not run at 100 MHz FSB. It was designed as a 66 MHz FSB Mobo but will do 83 MHz with no problems. It can be set to run at 100 MHz but its performance at this speed is unacceptable with the frequency very very unstable and always less than 100 MHz. A few weeks ago I tried a 600 MHz PIII in it at 100 MHz. No way!

If you want to use a 66 MHz chip then it will probably still work just fine, even overclocked to 83 MHz. However, most current chips are looking for a 100 MHz FSB and this board just can't go that fast. 133 MHz FSB capability is needed for any real overclocking ambitions.

well...... i think a celeron 600+ has to work with a good slotket. compared to your 266 it will be at least 2times as fast. if you can get it cheap go for a 700 or 733 maybe you can oc your way to around 1ghz.... although i think thats not going to work..

rawsnark,
Try going to Evergreens CPU upgrade page. You might be able to use their 700mhz Performa upgrade that is a Celery II, which also has SSE instructions . It says it was designed for people will PII 233,266, etc. And for $150 (with their instant rebate) it's a very inexpensive upgrade that can add life back to your LX6. I also have the LX6, but have not tried the Evergreen upgrade. Right now I'm using a Celeron 300a and running it at 375mhz (4.5 x 83mhz). I believe this is by far the best upgrade route for the LX6. Hope this helps .
