Lynnfield i5 or AMD 8320E?

I have an older i5 750 processor whose motherboard is dead. Should I get a replacement motherboard (LGA 1156 - not many of those around) for about $75 or jump on one of the Microcenter deals where I can get a 8320E + mobo for $120?

Is this for gaming? If those are your only two choices, I would probably get the FX, but could you consider a Haswell i3?

You probably won't find a decent 1156 board for a good price.

I would guess the $120 FX+MB combo deal motherboard is also not "decent"

but yes, I wouldn't recommend buying a 1156 motherboard at this point, unless you get it almost for free.

"new" 1156 boards start at 160 euro's, can't find used ones because the cpu's outlived the motherboards, you can have i5-750's for 30 euros because of this.

If a 1156 board dies it's time to upgrade, at least you can re-use the ddr3.

But it would be worth it to replace the board if you could get it (new) for like 70,- or something, cpu performance is still fine.

I would go for the FX8320E + Mobo. Just install a slow rpm fan on top of the VRM heat-sink and then OC the FX8320E to 4-4.2GHz. Turn Turbo off, increase NB to 2400MHz and raise FSB to 220MHz+.

From the two options that you listed. Going for fx deal is no brainer. Firstly, you would get better performace than the i5 you listed. Secondly you would get 8 cores which would be competitive to the Intel i7 older generation.

Thirdly, and most importantly you would get full warranty. And more latest features in motherboards compared to 1156 motherboards.

For the money, the 8320E with some OC love and an inexpensive CLC is great.

I would like to pick up a Micro Center combo and play with, but no time to do it right now.

There are some cases where the Lynnfield chip will perform better than an FX, as even that generation i5 has noticeably better (per-thread) performance per clock, but overall I'd take the FX.

Actually the i5 would be faster at just about everything, given a modest overclock. But it all depends on the kind of motherboard deal you can find. There are premium 1156 motherboards on ebay for good prices. But the safer route would be to sell the i5 to bring the total cost of the 8320 combo down to about $60.

The only 1156 boards I can find are on ebay; they are about $60-70 for what appear to be RMA replacements (in a static bag, no i/o shield).

The computer is for miscellaneous stuff, World of Warcraft, Counterstrike and photoshop every once in a while. Video card is going to be in the $100 to $130 price range, so settings aren't going to be maxxed out anyways.

i've bought some refurb boards from these guys before, and much of the fervor over 1366 xeon overclocking was started with boards from them as well

Oh I know what it is, if I knew it kept gremlins out I might install them more often. Usually just end up bending it and slicing my finger on it.

That little bit of stamped metal to go around your ports in the computer case, to keep dust and gremlins out.

It also keeps idiots like me from trying to shove usb plugs into places they shouldn't be
