I am not really a gun elitist...looking for real-world shooters.

I am looking for a gun for that end of world scenario. Most of the uber recommendations (like FN's) simply will not have any ammo around if the shit hits the fan.

I like the idea of the Mosin as it's a freaking monster when it comes to firing dirty and unmaintained, but I don't like the fact that some have reported buying them that were unshootable or dangerous/backfiring/etc.

If I did end up with the Mosin, I'd definitely drop another $100 or so on a nice stock. More than the gun is worth sure...but it'll pay off in handling it.

I intend to possibly buy a handgun as well, debating that a lot. I don't plan on a concealed carry I want something I know I can always find ammo for that will absofuckinglutely put my assailant down...I am concerned with shooting through body armor. Most of the thugs down here have better armor than the police.

You could buy ten Mosin Nagants for the price of one Garand.

Just sayin'.

My dad has an M1 Garand (Korean-era, IIRC, chambered in .308). It's a beautiful gun...but they aren't nearly as inexpensive and easy to find as they used to be.

I am concerned with shooting through body armor.

I'd tend to something in 7.62 NATO or 5.56 NATO before .30-06 from an ammo standpoint.

The vast majority of the Mosins are perfectly safe, just check the headspace to be sure.

Something you might want to consider being that the M1 is semi-auto, whilst the Mosin is bolt-action. I dunno what kind of rate of fire you want, so that may or may not matter. M1 is also a whole lot more expensive, but easier to find ammo for.

I've held a Mosin and can say it's a pretty decently sized rifle. Not sure how you'd replace the stock on it considering it's all wood, but I guess there is a way. Felt fine to me though and I probably wouldn't bother with that. Hoping my buddy will get it checked out one day so he knows its safe to shoot.

edit: but as mentioned an SKS might fit this bill better. tons of them out there and most use common ammo types.

I have a Mosin and like it as a plinker. Ammo is cheap and it's plenty powerful (I think the .30-06 and 7.62x54 are fairly similar as far as balistics). But, generally Mosins are not 'nice' guns. And the M1 is semi-auto which is a big plus. Lastly you can't beat, "bang-bang-bang-bang-bang-bang-bang-bang-bing!"

I don't think you can compare them very well considering the vastly different price ranges and features.

For the price of the M1, you can buy a couple of mosin's and thousands of rounds of ammo. Both will shoot through anything under a level 3 vest with ease. The M91 is a little big and the mosin will hurt you more, specifically the M44 and M38 models. I'm not sure which model you're talking about.

There is a lot of 7.62x54r for the mosin, but not much of it current and so you have to worry about how corrosive it is. There are no really nice stocks for it aside from the ATI synthetic and that will be hit or miss regarding fitting. Try to get an ak or variant like the saiga. The saiga can be found in different barrel lengths as well as calibers. 223, 308 and 7.62x39.

Regarding your handgun, choose a popular caliber. 9mm, 45 and 357mag/38spl are frontrunners with 40 s&w following. if someone is wearing a vest, unless you're carrying a 44 mag or 10mm, it won't matter anyway and take them down with your rifle. On that thought, handguns aren't that good when you want to kill someone. It is your backup, something you use to get to your rifle. Shot placement and training is more important. Since you're not going to carry, get a compact or full-sized model. I'll admit I'm a cheap pansy because I shoot 9mm. I even have a 9mm 1911 while there are 45's going off all around me. I can probably step up to a 45, but it will affects my followup shots and how much training I can fit into my budget.

For real shtf situations where I have to bug out, I'd be happy with my 20" 12ga, 9mm 1911 with 22lr conversion slide, and my bolt action 22lr. Anything in the city within 20 yards, I'll use the shotgun and my 9mm handgun as backup. Light survival hunting with the 22lr slide or the rifle. If I need to reach out and touch someone, I have enough experience with my bolty to put rounds in a 10" circle at 300 yards.

If you haven't held either one, they are both huge, heavy guns.

.30-06 is kinda common, but the Garand wasn't made to shoot what is available off the shelf.

In between those two price wise, you can pick up an SKS. Still heavy, but relatively plentiful ammo and easy to keep going. Pretty simple design.

It shoots 7.62x54R, which is slightly different than the other more common forms of 7.62. Also more expensive to buy. Although ammoman has it for some decent prices.

If you are looking for easy to find ammo, guns that work well when dirty, and guns that have decent knockdown power....are you open to an AK47?

Yeah, for a SHTF gun, I think cheap/common ammo and durability are probably the two most important characteristics. And for that, you really can't beat an AK-47.

True but if you were in the US there would be a lot more .233 ammo then 7.62 correct?

Not the Mosin. They might've been reliable back when they were newer, but you just don't know what you're getting in surplus.

Mine was great for the first few times to the range, until it started splitting casings. That's very dangerous.

If you want a surplus semi-auto at a reasonable price, you can't beat the SKS. Otherwise, the Garand will be lots of fun at the range, but expensive to shoot. It'll be reliable, though.

If you want one of the finest bolt-action rifles ever made, the Swiss-issue K-31 is hard to beat. They've about tripled in price since I got mine, but they can still be had in the $300 range. Ammo isn't cheap, but others will tell you that the standard issue GP-11 round is almost good enough for match shooting.

I love surplus rifles
