I bought a service grade Garand from the CMP about 3 years ago. It's a lot of fun to shoot. You won't regret buying it.
There is no THE Springfield M1A. There are several Springfield M1A's. And you should not be paying 2 grand for the basic models. 1400 plus tax. And If you buy it in store you should not be paying transfer fees.
Is it legal for you to buy it out of state and drive it across the line?
Is that the gun that goes,
Tat! Tat! Tat! PING!
No, that's the M1A1 Carbine.
The Garand makes a satisfying Thunk thunk thunk thunk thunk thunk reload

What does something like that cost?
I like SMLEs. but the M1 is nicer.
I think the "ping" is when the clip is ejected when empty.
More like Bang, bang, bang, ping.

"Ejection of an empty clip created a distinctive metallic "pinging" sound"
Put the order form in the mail today for a service grade Springfield M1 Garand from the CMP.
I've been wanting one of these for years and decided it was time to do it before they run out and the only way to get one is to pay out the ass at a gun show.
Call your congressman, There are 78,000 garands in South Korea that were going to be sent back to the U.S. but the obama administration did an about face and blocked the sale.
That article burns me up.http://www.foxnews.com/politics/201...everses-course-forbids-sale-antique-m-rifles/
"A State Department spokesman said the administration's decision was based on concerns that the guns could fall into the wrong hands.
"The transfer of such a large number of weapons -- 87,310 M1 Garands and 770,160 M1 Carbines -- could potentially be exploited by individuals seeking firearms for illicit purposes," the spokesman told FoxNews.com."
I love Obama. Great move, I would hate to see drive-by shootings with an M1.

I read on another forum that someone quoted from the CMP forum that the real reason they're being held up, is that Korea wants us to BUY them back. The problem with that is that they were GIVEN to the Koreans, not sold. So they are technically ours already, per the terms of the original agreement.
But I still hate the Brady campaigners.
I'm pretty sure we gave them to the Koreans, not borrow them.
