Mac and the future of gaming

While the Mac is an awesome platform for just about everything (IMO), I'm skeptical of its performance in gaming. It seems that the graphics card options are spare and pretty far behind.

I will soon be purchasing a Mac Pro and I'm hoping the quality of the processor, memory, etc might make up for the soon to be out-dated x1900? How often does Apple come out with new video cards? Is a closer relationship with Apple and nVidia/ATI on the way?

i've heard of overheating problems with the x1900, so you might want to do some more research before putting out the money for one. the mac pro hasn't been refreshed like everything else, so maybe it'll be next with some better graphics solutions.

People don't buy Macs for gaming. They buy $300 PCs then add $230 8800GTS/320 graphics cards to them for gaming....and they game much better than $2500 Macs. Such is life.

For basic games, the 1600 / 7300 / 7600 / 2400 / 2600 in the current and previous-gen iMacs isn't half bad.

It can be told by the SKUs in Apple's lineup that they are not made for gaming. You can get a Core 2 Extreme and 4GB of RAM in the 24" iMac, but the best card is a HD2600. Which is not a slouch of a card, and will be more than sufficient to run that monitor, plus maybe a 30" Widescreen, but it is not going to be great for gaming at that res.
