d) iDVD does it encode DD 2.0? On the comparison page it doesn't mention Dolby at all. Is it just PCM which is a huge waste of space? "Combining iMovie HD with iDVD, you can create not just a run-of-the-mill DVD, but a blockbuster." So by stating that it should include Dolby encoding correct? http://www.apple.com/finalcut/

e) iDVD Can it export to an .iso which can be burnt on windows if transfered over, thus eliminating the $100 4X DVD±R if only doing occassionaly dvd burning. Finally Apple doesn't restrict to DVD-R only and allows burning DVD+R. Question does it allow book-type bitsetting though for DVD+R media?

f) 1.25GHz vs. 1.42GHz ...now granted it sure doesn't seem worth the extra $100 ($50 actually if the 80GB hd is worth $50 upgrade). I wonder if the 1.42GHz really is worth it. It just seems like if I had a Pentium 500Mhz would I upgrade it to a Pentium 700Mhz for $100...I doubt it.

g) Everytime you view a .mov does Quicktime in Mac OS X have the "Upgrade Now or Later" crap that windows quicktime has?

iDVD uses PCM. I'm not sure of the reason, maybe it's to sell more copies of DVD Studio Pro. (Which is a very impressive pro DVD authoring package, but it's expensive and you almost need to buy Motion with it to make use of all of the features).

I believe iDVD exports can only be imported into another copy of iDVD, so I don't think you can burn an iDVD project from a Windows PC. However, DVD Studio Pro does allow for a crossplatform export of the disc image.

The G4 is limited by its 167 MHz FSB, and since both the 1.25 GHz and 1.42 GHz models have the same amount of on-die L2 cache (512 KB) and the same graphics specs, I doubt you would see much of a real world performance difference. But the extra $100 does also buy you a larger hard drive.

The Quicktime player in Mac OS X also has that annoying banner, but it usually happens only once every reboot. I was watching some movie trailers on my PowerBook yesterday, I watched about 10 trailers and I only saw that banner once. There are better Quicktime front-ends than that app, plus with iMovie you don't really need the pro version of the player for editing. It's a pretty stupid form of nagware, especially when you see it on a brand new Mac you just paid for...

Apparently, Apple's .dmg disc images (including from iDVD) can be converted to .iso files with Apple's Disk Utility, or from the command line. These files will be compatible with Nero (or whatever PC burning software you use). I've never tried doing this though, since I always burn from a Mac anyway.

See here.

You might also be able to convert the image with Roxio Popcorn, which is sort of a swiss army knife for DVD copying / imaging. It's not for authoring menus and such though, that task is best left to iDVD (included with Mac OS X) or DVD Studio Pro ($499 retail, or $499 academic for FinalCutProHD, DVD Studio Pro, and Motion bundled together).

does anyone know of any other mac/os x beginners guides?
The Barnes & Noble stores have a large section of Mac OS X books these days. I was at my local B&N yesterday and I swear you would think Apple had 30% marketshare based on all of the Mac based books they had.

I learnt OS X with this book and just simply fiddling around with the OS:Panther unleashed
it covers the basics pretty well, gives lots of handy little tips and when you are done with the GUI it dives into some very detailed terminal howtos. Including setting up gftpd with your own settings, samba.conf tips and a load of other things too.

Highly recommended!!

"OSX 10.3 Panther: The Missing Manual" is supposed to be good... not sure if that's the exact title... but it's similar. I would say that you defintely don't need to get any books to learn OSX. Simply play with it for a day of 2 and you'll get the hang of it. Most setings are changed in one simple settings interface... everything's right there at your fingertips. I know I bought a book about how to use OSX when I got my powerbook. Yeah it never got used... there was no need. www.macnn.com forums if you have any problems... great people there...

I bought a Mac mini 1.25 stock model on Friday and am really digging it (especially now that I configured remote desktop to my XP machine). If anybody has any questions, feel free to ask. Perhaps I'll post a short review sometime.

Just put in a 1GB PQI PC3200 stick I ordered from Newegg. Never heard of the brand, but it had rave reviews at Newegg. Everything seems a lot quicker than when running on 256MB. Haven't really put it to the test yet, but am happy so far.

Nothing quite as seamless as DVDshrink from what I've read. There's some ripping program out there for free I believe, but the encoding program costs money supposedly. However, I suppose it's possible that you could use virtual PC (but then again, that'd most likely run like ass on a mini).

Odd thing was, I had my first crash on the thing last night. I'm thinking it was do to some networking error, because I was trying to access a share on the mini from my XP box and when I switched my monitor input back to the mini, it informed me that I needed to restart (machine was hard locked). Odd, but I suspect Microsoft may be at work on this one

As a side note - iTunes is an incredibly fast ripping/encoding combo for lossless on the mini.

Got my Mini the other day. Had to drive with a friend almost 100 Miles each way to find one in stock. It was at Frys Electronics in Concord, Ca. Love it so far! Very fast for it's CPU speed and so small. It's amazing they got so much in such a small case. Looks amazing! Runs very COLD even under stress. VERY QUIET!

Memory upgrade was very easy and as long as you are carefull you won't damage anything. Upped it to 512 till I can get a 1GB DIMM. Put in a Kingston Value Ram 512Meg PC2700 DDR Dimm. Works perfectally and really speeds things up especially with a lot of stuff running. Bought a Griffin IMic for doing Audio work, Works QUITE well and sounds better than the built in Line/Mic input on my 500Mhz Sawtooth and of course gives the Mini audio input also. I would highly recomend both the Mini and the Griffin IMic!

I have done a LOT of repair to circuit boards in my time, but that overclocking thing for the Mini looks very dangerous unless you have VERY STEADY hands, VERY good Eyes with a Magnifier and a VERY SMALL Tipped iron. I would and will pass on doing it. One slip and your MINI could be history! It's fine the way it is.
