Please tell me why people are so excited about the Mac mini?

Sorry to rant, but it's a POS and almost every person out there who doesn't know a thing about computers is wanting one!

Ok, down here Australia, it costs $799 for the box alone and it's being sold as the cheapest thing out. Which is completely untrue if you compare it to a comparable PC offering (without monitor, keyboard or mouse).

Also, there's a 2-3 week build time down here for this system. Amazing when you compare it to the "build-time" on non-custom machines - ready for pick-up same day if they're in stock.

Anyway, add that to the usual Mac-bashing and I think my point begins to make sense.

It's not a cheap system.

Unless you already have keyboard mouse and monitor, it's not good value at all.

It's designed for people who buy nothing but the box and already have a monitor to plug it into. It's to try and corner the PC user market.

The point is, it's the cheapest thing out to run Mac OS X, which is why all the hoo-hah is about it. The system, hardware wise, is pretty crud, but that's not the point. To get good hardware in the apple world you need to rise to the top of the PowerMac pile, to come close to high end PC hardware.

We all know that. That's not why the Mac Mini is a POS, though. if it's not for you, it's not for you, but I would certainly say there is a market for it.

Piro, I know what you're saying about it not being a cheap system, but the thing is, it's being advertised as a cheap system down here.

Mind you, I think Apple have a good marketing department. Judging by how good they are, I'm sure Apple could save a few hundred million and sack them all, and shave about 25% off the costs of their systems.

Then they might be worth it. Maybe...

The Mac Mini is being pushed as a media machine. You're supposed to plug it into your TV and receiver.

The Media Center PCs are still over a grand.

I know, they're advertised everywhere as the lowest cost apple mac yet. Which is true. It still doesn't make it good value if you then throw on an apple cinema display and associated bits. They're not good value, but I want one just to be able to play with Mac OS X, which is surely the way a lot of people will feel about it.

I wouldn't actually buy one though, food and beer come on a higher priority than the Mac Mini.

Not only that, but just compare it to the price of other Apple products. If I had the extra money lying around, I'd pick one up for development. It's slick looking like all Apple products, it's no doubt spectacularly engineered, like all Apple products, and it's finally at a price that will make PC users says "hmm, I just might get that."

It's a great move by Apple. OP, you dont really have any complaints that are founded in my opinion. OSX is a great operating system and lightyears ahead of the garbage that was OS9... plus everything a non-gamer needs is built into the MiniMac.

No I know what you mean though. It is a great move by Apple - as I said, their marketing department are definitely worth the money Apple are paying them.

So is the mini a maxi value? For me, clearly, no. When I consider that a good deal of my time is spent running applications like Disk Defragmenter, Scandisk, Norton AV, Windows Update and Ad-Aware--none of which are available for the Mac platform--it doesn't make sense for me to "switch" to a Mac at this time. But will Apple's famous marketing team be able to sell the the emperor an invisible computer anyway and turn the mini into a maxi hit? That?s the question that remains to be answered.

People on the AT forums, computer enthusiats, like it because it is an inexpensive way to play with OS X and Macs.

I am guessing that non-enthusiast will like because it is really small.

My idea of a computer system is a big case with seven hard drives, dvd burner, a step down from the fastet cpu and motherboard available, router, and two or three laptops. But for some people the smaller the footprint a computer has the better.

$799 aus? If so, that sounds about right for $499 us. It's not the cheapest thing out there. it's just the best for the size...and for a Mac, it is insanely cheap. Compare to $799 us for the cheapest eMac. Oh, and you need to make the keyboard USB.

Er, that's about the wait time in the U.S., if you didn't get one on openning day.

The Mac mini is cool. Not having FB2K running is really the worst thing about using it.
OS X is cool, even if the dock sucks a big one.
It is quiet. Dead quiet for office style use.
It looks cool.
It is simple and small.
It has everything you need aside from games and an audio player worth anything (granted, FB2K is a very high standard to match).
