Mac on Windows Network?

I have an old Macintosh Performa 575 sitting around and I'm wondering what I need to get it hooked up to a PC network so I can share our new broadband connection. The Mac has no networking hardware. We have a 2 PC network (with one more PC coming soon) and a 5 port hub. The network uses the phone-line style cables. We have the computer with the broadband connection running a proxy server. What do I need to do to hook these up?
Thanks.

You need:

1) An ethernet card for the Mac. Suggest searching auction sites for this or else marry a rich girl.

2) PC MACLAN by Miramar Systems. It costs $150. But there is a demo version that works for 3 hours, then you must reboot your system to use it for 3 more hours, then reboot, etc. But it works.

If your proxy server supports DHCP it is easier to set up, otherwise you have to assign IP addresses, etc.

Mac networking terminology is much different than PC networking. Good Luck! I got my Powerbook Duo to work with my Windows network, so it can be done.

The computer with the actual connection is running NT Server 4.0, so we have DHCP. I've looked at a few of the cards available and they look too big to use in the back of the Mac. The back of the mac has a parallel port and a modem port. Can I hook up to ethernet with these similar to the way I can use a USB ethernet on my PC? Thanks.

Since you are running NT Server you can install Mac Services instead of PC Maclan, although PC Maclan does work well

I think that there is a square block on the back of the MAC (right side)that you "knock out". There is a card that you install on the motherboard, I belive you need an LC Slot Ethernet Card. I would suggest going with an Asante NIC. If you go the to Asante website, I think they will tell you what your options are for a 575 (I would guess the NIC costs around $75). I would NOT suggest buying ONLINE as you will need tech support if you are asking these questions. I would also suggest using System 7.6.1 too while your at it. If you only need TCP/IP for internet access, then your NT server will do fine running DHCP, if you want file & print sharing, I would check into this further. I've heard the NT folks say adding Mac Services is a surefire way to wack your already unstable NT into minute by minute crashing NT server. I can tell you that Netware 4.x and up works well with Mac Services from my experience (I've worked in K-12 schools for over 8 years as a network admin).

Hope this gets you down the right rode....

I've also heard NT Server's Mac services are not very stable. But since it's just for fun you could try it. The biggest problem you will probably come across is finding an ethernet adapter. My Mac Duo Dock has a proprietary Apple Nubus ethernet card, and it looks really small compared to others I have seen. Maybe that's what you need? Dunno much about Macs, but I got mine working without a lot of trouble.

Thanks H.A.R.M. Those directions are great. I'll look at getting a NIC card for it on Monday and see what I can do. Thanks.
